Women’s Basketball slide continues against University of New England

BIDDEFORD, Maine – A late charge by the University of New England led the Nor'Easters past the Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team Saturday afternoon, as UNE defeated the Hawks 66-91.

The loss for Roger Williams marks the team's fifth consecutive setback and puts the team in a three-way tie for fifth place in The Commonwealth Coast Conference, while UNE moves into a tie for second place in the conference.

The Hawks began the game on an 8-0 run and led by as many as ten. Although UNE came back to tie the game at 32 with 2:17 to play in the period, the Hawks would go into the break leading 37-35.

The opening of the second half went back and forth, as the teams combined for four ties and four lead changes over the first eight minutes of the game. Trailing 50-54, the Hawks would sandwich three pointers by Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) and Ari Renwick (Westwood, Mass.) around a pair of UNE free throws to knot the contest at 56.

Those would be the last points for the Hawks over a five-minute stretch that saw the Nor'Easters roll off a 12-0 run before a Renwick free throw ended the scoring drought. UNe would respond with a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to put the game out of the Hawks' reach.

Carrie Bunnell (Barnet, Vt.) finished with 23 points and six assists for UNE, while Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) added 21 points and six steals. Megan DeRaps (Richmond, Maine) chipped in with 19 points and four steals off the bench.

For the Hawks, Bovee scored 16 points with seven rebounds, with Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) adding ten points and three blocks. Renwick contributed 13 points off the bench.

Roger Williams (12-8, 5-4 TCCC) travels to Anna Maria College Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. game, while UNE (15-6, 8-1) plays Endicott College, also on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
