Baseball grabs pair in TCCC Opener

QUINCY, Mass. — The Roger Williams University Baseball team pounded out 19 hits en route to scoring 14 runs in a clean sweep of Eastern Nazarene Saturday with scores of 7-3 and 7-4.

Roger Williams received outstanding pitching performances from both starting pitchers as sophomore Josh Orosz (Fairfield, Conn.) and freshman Sean Boyle (Arlington, Mass.) combined to allow just four earned runs in 12 innings of work combined.

Roger Williams jumped out on top early in game one on the back of three consecutive singles to take the early lead and set the tone for the day. Sophomore Swensen (Charlton, Mass.) capped the three run first inning with a two run single that plated Trevor Manzi (Beverly, Mass.) and Tony Trafecanty (Franklin, Mass.).

Eastern Nazarene got on the board in the bottom of the second on a Carlos Silver RBI ground out but the Hawks answered right back as Trafecanty came through with a single that brought home Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.) to give Roger Williams a 5-1 lead.

Eastern Nazarene pitcher Justin Denbow settled in allowing just one earned run over the next four innings, his only earned run of the day, but the Lions were unable to put together enough offense as Roger Williams held on for the 7-3 win.

Trafecanty finished with three hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored in game one to lead the Hawks. Swensen and Eric Bransfield (Lynn, Mass.) each added two hits and scored a run.

Pitching for both sides dominated game two as Boyle allowed just one earned run in six innings of work while Eastern Nazarene's Jared Daniels went five and two thirds without allowing an earned run.

Roger Williams capitalized on six Lions' errors to score three runs in both the first and sixth innings while adding a single run in the fourth to build a commanding 7-0 lead.

Eastern Nazarene rallied in the last of the seventh as freshman as a leadoff error followed by a walk gave the Lions new life in their last at bat. With the bases loaded and no outs, senior first baseman Luke Matthews drew a walk that brought home Dave Rivera to cut the deficit to six. After Danny Rodriguez singled home a run, Dave Manning hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring the tally to 7-3. Freshman outfielder Max Pugh followed with an RBI single to cut the Hawks lead to just four with only one out.

Roger Williams Head Coach Derek Carlson went to the bullpen for freshman right hander Tyler Pogmore (Lebanon, Conn.) who shut the door on the Lions for the save and the 7-4 Roger Williams win.

Roger Williams' Mike Thomas (Plainville, Conn.) was the only Hawk in game two with multiple hits as the freshman also scored a run and drove in two in four trips to the plate.

For Eastern Nazarene, Pugh finished with three hits to tie his season high while Steve Doyle added two hits and scored a run.

The pair of victories take Roger Williams to 6-8 overall and 2-0 in the Commonwealth coast Conference while Eastern Nazarene drops to 5-9 and 2-2 in league play.

Roger Williams will try to remain perfect in the TCCC tomorrow as the Hawks travel to Newport, RI to take on Salve Regina University in a 12pm doubleheader. Eastern Nazarene will play next on Tuesday as they travel to Lasell College for a 7pm night game.
