Rhode Island College halts Baseball

BRISTOL, R.I. – Cross-town rival Rhode Island College got the best of the Roger Williams University Baseball team with a 7-4 non-conference road victory Tuesday afternoon.

The Anchormen got on the scoreboard in the top of the first via a sacrifice fly by Dan Hopkins (Cranston, R.I.), scoring J.P. Stone (Narragansett, R.I.). The Hawks would come back in the bottom half of the inning, as Mike Pascarella (Northbridge, Mass.) led off with a home run to right field. Tony Trafecanty (Franklin, Mass.) followed that up with an RBI single to right, bringing in Tim Georgen (Bristol, Conn.) to make it a 2-1 Hawk lead.

The Anchormen would regain the lead in the top of the third, getting three runs to go on top 4-2. With the bases loaded, Stone scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at two apiece. After a heads up play by Matt Swensen (Charlton, Mass.) at third base to take down Kyle Allaire (Uxbridge, Mass.) at home trying to score, Hopkins scored from third on a heads-up play. With a short dribble in front of home, Hopkins was able to slide in safely before the ball was grabbed and a tag could be made. Justin Corso (Cranston, R.I.) followed with an RBI single for the third run of the inning.

Rhode Island College added a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings before the Hawks plated another run in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs and Trevor Manzi (Beverly, Mass.) on third, Trafecanty sent a double to center field to bring him in and pull RWU within three.

After an errant throw scored RIC's seventh run in the top of the ninth, the Hawks were able to put one run on the board with Eric Bransfield (Lynn, Mass.) scoring on a wild pitch. Yet the Hawks couldn't complete the comeback, as Rhode Island College held on to move to .500.

Mike DeWald (Hope Valley, R.I.) earned his first win of the year, pitching five innings and giving up two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three. Rob Rushton (Freetown, Mass.) started the first four innings, giving up a pair of runs. Allaire went 2-for-3 with a run, with Stone adding a hit and two runs scored.

Eric Diffily (North Reading, Mass.) took the loss for RWU, tagged for four runs off four hits and three walks in three innings. Trafecanty finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Zach Porter (Middleboro, Mass.) was 3-for-3 in the game.

Roger Williams (7-10) steps back into TCCC play with a doubleheader at Gordon College on Wednesday afternoon, while Rhode Island College (6-6) travels to Becker College on Thursday.
