Baseball picks up sweep against Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. - Playing host to the Roger Williams University Baseball team in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) doubleheader, the Gordon College Fighting Scots dropped both on the day to move to 3-14 overall, 1-7 in TCCC.

After a scoreless first inning of game one, Roger Williams broke onto the boards with a two-run second when freshman TJ Oliver (Manchester, Vt.) hit an RBI single and later came home himself after a Gordon error. The Scots' Dillon Coleman (Cromwell, Conn.) answered back in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single to make it a 2-1 game after four.

The Hawks extended their lead with another pair of runs in the top of the fifth before Gordon had its biggest offensive surge of the day off an Erik Wolak (Jr., Trumbull, Conn.) homerun which brought in three runs in the bottom half of the same inning.

Heading to extra innings after a scoreless sixth and seventh, the Hawks looked well-positioned for the win following a single-run eighth, but the Scots answered right back with a run of their own to keep the game at a deadlock.

In the end, however, it was the Hawks who claimed victory in the 11th when junior Trevor Manzi (Beverly, Mass.) hit a walk-off homer to lift his team to the 6-5 win.

Game two looked to be another close one as neither team was able to break the silence through five innings. Then, in the top of the sixth, the Hawks exploded for six runs on four hits to build a sizable lead over their host. And despite a Wolak RBI single, the Scots fell short of the comeback effort and ceded the game, 6-1.

The Scots will take a break from conference action on Friday, April 1 as they play host to the Vikings of Salem State College at 3:00 p.m.
