Box Score
BABSON PARK, Mass. – Sophomore Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 86-minute mark to cap off a late rally as the visiting Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team upset nationally-ranked host Babson College in the opening game of the 2011 season at Hartwell-Rogers Field on Thursday afternoon.
Junior Billy Kissane (Glastonbury, Conn.) put the Hawks on the board with a goal off a Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine) pass at 25:39, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead that they would eventually take into the break. Babson then came out firing in the second half, as junior All-American Eric Anderson (Scituate, Mass.) and senior captain Max Walker (Newton, Mass.) each scored goals in the first 2:04 of the period to put Babson in front, 2-1.
That lead would hold up until the 76th minute, when Roger Williams sophomore Andrew Nigro's (Scarborough, Maine) service from the right side was headed inside the right post by senior Liam Isleib (Killingworth, Conn.), knotting the score at 2-2. That set the stage for Caruso's game-winner at 86:04, as he took a feed from junior Bradley Macdonal (Topsfield, Mass.) on the right side and blasted it past Babson senior keeper Peter Crowley (Lexington, Mass.).
Babson would register its final shot of the contest just 30 seconds later, when Anderson's bid from inside the box was corralled by Hawks' sophomore goalie Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.). The Beavers would earn a corner kick with less than a minute left, but the Roger Williams defense successfully cleared the ball away as the visitors held on for the 3-2 victory.
Pelloso finished with five saves in net for Roger Williams, while Crowley turned away three shots in goal for Babson.
Roger Williams (1-0-0) will host its annual Turfer Classic Saturday, opening against Rhode Island College, while the Beavers (0-1-0) host Hobart on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
