Men’s Soccer nets eight in win over Eastern Nazarene

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team began Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a convincing 8-1 win against Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday afternoon.

It did not take long for the Hawks to log their first score on the board, with Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) notching a score on a penalty kick in the fifth minute. A handball on a cross in the box gave Caruso the free try, which he converted to put the Hawks up by one. Less than two minutes later, Andres Daza (Farmington, Conn.) headed in a cross by Liam Isleib (Killingworth, Conn.) into the right corner of the goal to give RWU a 2-0 lead.

In the 10th minute, Caruso added his second score of the match, taking a pass from Daza on the left side of the box and dropping in a shot to the right corner. Six minutes later, Paul Arute (Westbrook, Maine) placed a long pass over midfield to a running Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine), who was able to beat the Lions' keeper one-on-one a score to put the Hawks up by a 4-0 score.

The Hawks would add two more scores in the half by Billy Kissane (Glastonbury, Conn.) in the 20th minute and one more by Caruso in the 30th minute for his first career hat trick.

In the second half, Cooper Allebrand (Santa Barbara, Calif.) notched his first collegiate goal less than two minutes into the period to make it a seven-goal lead. Eastern Nazarene would end the shutout with a goal in the 65th minute by Josh Kaplan (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), putting the Lions on the board for the first time on the day. Yet the Hawks would get the goal right by in the 67th minute on Allebrand's second score of the game.

Eastern Nazarene had a couple of opportunities in the game to bring the score closer. Chris Scearbo (Boxford, Mass.) took the ball down the middle of the field in the 10th minute but misfired to the left on his attempt. In the 74th minute, his dead-on shot would be blocked by Andre Gittens (Stamford, Conn.) to keep the Lions at bay.

Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.) earned the win for the Hawks, making two saves in the first half. Tom Mangels (Garden City, N.Y.) and Kevin Oliveira (Bristol, R.I.) both split time in the second half for RWU. Andrew Carlson (Ridgefield, Conn.), Henry Gould (Kennebunk, Maine), and Scott Boucher (Harwinton, Conn.) each added an assist for the Hawks. Eastern Nazarene's Jake Johnson (Mount Bethel, Pa.) took the loss, making five saves in the game.

Roger Williams (4-0-1, 1-0-0 CCC) hosts Framingham State College Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m., while Eastern Nazarene (0-4-0, 0-2-0 CCC) travels to UMass-Boston Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
