BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer rolled off its sixth straight win Wednesday evening with a 1-0 win over MIT. The victory keeps the Hawks unbeaten on the season, improving to 7-0-1, while MIT falls to 4-3-1.
MIT kept the Roger Williams defense busy throughout the first half, putting up ten shots, including six on goal. Despite the continued efforts of the Engineers, the Hawk defense kept MIT off the board. RWU keeper Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.) stopped all six shots on net in the period.
MIT had a good opportunity to score in the 26th minute, when Engineer keeper Dylan Rankin (Providence, R.I.) launched a strong kick over midfield and just outside the box. The high bounce of the kick allowed John Kramer (Glastonbury, Conn.) to bounce the ball to himself and make a run towards the goal. Unfortunately for Kramer, he was called for a handball before he was able to control the ball en route to the net.
Early in the second half, the Engineers again came close to scoring with Ben Lewis firing a shot off of a corner kick in the 48th minute. Yet a heading stop by Billy Kissane (Glastonbury, Conn.) kept the match scoreless.
The Hawks persisted until the 62nd minute when they finally broke through on the scoreboard. Bradley Macdonald (Topsfield, Mass.) sent a long pass from midfield to the left corner to Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.). Caruso would then set up Kissane in the box with a centering pass for a shot into the right corner to put RWU on top 1-0.
With the lead, the RWU defense would continue its stalwart play, holding the Engineers off the board despite MIT continuing to push into the offensive third. With the help of Kamali Webson (Bellingham, Mass.), Paul Arute (Tolland, Conn.), Rich Pomeroy (Groton, Mass.), and Andrew Nigro (Scarborough, Maine), the Hawks maintained the shutout and rolled off their sixth straight victory.
Pelloso stopped nine shots for the Hawks in the victory, earning his first career shutout. Rankin made three saves for MIT in the loss.
Roger Williams plays its first road game in three weeks with a noon matchup with the University of New England on Saturday. MIT heads to WPI Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
