BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team extended its winning streak to six matches with a 3-0 win (25-19, 25-15, 25-17) over Emerson College Tuesday evening on its annual Dig Pink Night.
The win for Roger Williams moves RWU up to 15-3, while the loss for the Lions snaps a five-match winning streak of their own and puts Emerson at 10-4.
The match began with both teams trading kills, Andrea Gorman (Wilbraham, Mass.) opening with a kill for the Hawks followed by one for Emerson's Jessica Drumright (San Francisco, Calif.). Roger Williams would ultimately break a four-all tie with a 5-0 run, helped by three service aces by Kelsee Loche (Millis, Mass.). The five-point lead would help the Hawks keep a cushion between them and Emerson over the rest of the set, as the Lions would not pull closer than three. A Lion swinging error would give the Hawks the 25-19 win in the opening game.
Emerson kicked off the second set with the first two points, getting a kill from Kathleen Bailey (Calabasas, Calif.) and a block assist by Megan Kaplon (Yellow Springs, Ohio) and Kat Rice (Delmar, N.Y.). The Hawks would score the next two points with a kill from Kelsey Twarog (Barkhamsted, Conn.) and an ace from Marilu Gonzalez-Yanez (Los Angeles, Calif.). This would be indicative of the rest of the set, with the two squads combining for eight ties. RWU would break away from the Lions with a 7-0 run, making a 12-12 game into a 19-12 RWU advantage. Twarog closed the game with a kill to give RWU the 25-15 win.
Roger Williams opened the third set on an 8-2 run, which set the tone early for the game. The Hawks led by at least four points throughout the game, with their largest lead being a 19-10 advantage. A double touch on the final ball of the set gave the match to RWU, closing out with a score of 25-17.
Marybeth Torpey (Quincy, Mass.) led the Hawks with 15 kills to go along with six digs. Twarog had 13 kills, while Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) went for 33 assists. Loche had a team-high 13 digs, while Holly Hancock (Tilton, N.H.) finished with three blocks (one solo, two assists).
Drumright, Madeleine Breeland (Fairfax, Va.), and Alexa Krakowiak (Westport, Conn.) each tied for the Emerson lead with five kills each. Drumright also added ten assists and two block assists. Jamie Morgan (Maple Glen, Pa.) finished with a match-high 14 digs.
Roger Williams travels to Mass. Maritime on Thursday while Emerson will be at a tri-match on Saturday against Pine Manor and Norwich.
