BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University withstood a late rally by Norwich University Sunday afternoon to hold on for a 2-1 victory and win the 7th Annual Roger Williams University Turfer Athletic Classic.
After a scoreless first half, the Hawks netted two goals in the second period, with the first coming in the 48th minute off of the foot of Andres Daza (Farmington, Conn.). Daza took a pass from All-Tournament Team selection Bradley Macdonald (Topsfield, Mass.) and fired a shot just outside the right side of the box and found a fortunate bounce off left post. The ball ricocheted off the bottom of the left post and rolled in for the first score of the game.
The Hawks added another insurance goal in the 85th minute, when Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) served a long pass in the middle to tournament Offensive MVP Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine). Hoxsie slipped past two Cadet defenders and put in shot to put the Hawks up by two.
That goal would ultimately prove crucial for the Hawks, as the Cadets answered less than two minutes later. Halfway through the 86th minute, Eric Weir (Ipswich, Mass.) served up a corner kick into the box, where Wesley Keslin (Brossard, Que.) was waiting to put in the ball off of a hop and bring Norwich within one.
The Cadets had one last opportunity to send the game into overtime in the final minute, with two Hawk defenders running after two Cadet midfielder streaking in the box for a through pass. Yet Jon Pelloso (Wlibraham, Mass.) was able to corral the ball before Norwich was able to make an attempt on the ball, ending the potential rally and securing the win for the Hawks.
Pelloso did not need to make a save in the win, as Roger Williams outshot Norwich 21-5 in the contest. Cadet goalie Christian Hallstrom (Las Vegas, Nev.) made six stops in the game.
The prior game featured Rhode Island College and Castleton State College, with RIC defeating the Spartans 2-1 in overtime. All-Tournament Team selection Donald Dane (Derry, N.H.) notched the first score of the game, putting in a rebound off of a deflected save from a shot by Patrick Laroche (Gardner, Mass.) in the 17th minute.
Castleton State nearly tied the game early in the second half with All-Tournament Team selection Trevor Kotrady (North Clarendon, Vt.) just missing a one-timer on a pass by Spencer Dandurand (Colchester, Vt.). The turning point would come in the 82nd minute, as a hand ball was called on the Anchormen on a Spartan shot attempt in the box, giving Castleton State a penalty kick. Dameon Young (Fairfax, Vt.) would convert the try, tying the game at one and sending it to OT.
In OT, Dane would put in the game winner in the 97th minute, knocking in a one-timer off a pass from Peter Amoriggi (Smithfield, R.I.).
Nick Clark (East Bridgewater, Mass.) picked up the win for RIC, making four saves in the game, while his Castleton State counterpart Nate Koenemann (Montpelier, Vt.) stopped eight shots in the loss.
