BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team kicked off its first night game on the new turf stadium at Bayside Field with a 3-1 victory of Rhode Island College Thursday evening.
The Hawks remain undefeated on the year, improving to 3-0-1, while the Anchormen, playing its third straight game of the year on the field at Roger Williams, fall to 1-2-0.
The Hawks put their first tally on the board quickly in the game, with Bradley Macdonald (Topsfield, Mass.) scoring on a deflected save by RIC keeper Nick Clark (East Bridgewater, Mass.) at the 5:24 mark. Liam Isleib (Killingworth, Conn.) dropped in a cross in the box to Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine), who fired a shot at Clark. Clark stopped the attempt but could not hold on to ball, as Macdonald put in the loose ball.
Hoxsie would add to the Hawks' score in the 28th minute, going around a pair of Rhode Island College defenders and putting a shot to the right corner of the net to make it a 2-0 Hawk advantage.
The Anchormen pulled within one in the 38th minute, with Hector Espiladora Fortuna (Malaga, Spain) taking a free kick from about 30 feet inside midfield. The ball took a high bounce to the right over the wall inside the box and made its way to the right side of the net, making it a 2-1 game heading into halftime.
The Hawks wasted little time increasing their lead in the second half, with Isleib tallying a score in the 48th minute. Isleib, who was fouled just in front of the box, fired a shot on the ensuing free kick through the wall and found the hands of Clark. Yet the momentum of the shot spun off his hands and rolled into the net for the third goal of the game.
Rhode Island College nearly added another score in the 61st minute, when Mike (Warren, R.I.) crossed in a beautiful pass to Espiladora Fortuna in the box, but the officials ruled offsides before a shot could be made. The 3-1 score would ultimately hold for the Hawks.
Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.) made two saves in the first half to earn the win. Tom Mangels (Garden City, N.Y.) came in the second half and stopped three shots for the Hawks. Clark made five saves in the loss for RIC.
