Women’s Basketball rolls to win over Curry

MILTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team defeated Curry, 67-60, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Tuesday night in Milton. The Hawks improved to 6-5 overall and 3-1 in CCC action, while the Colonels fell to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Roger Williams opened the game with a 10-1 run that was capped by layup from freshman Lisa Lutz (Downers Grove, III.) The Hawks went on to build a 12-point edge with 1:15 remaining in the first half. Curry responded with an 8-0 run over the remainder of the period that culminated with a three-pointer by freshman Christina Deiorio (Stoughton, Mass.) to cut the deficit to four (35-31) at intermission.

Roger Williams' biggest lead of the second half (43-35) came after senior Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) made a layup with 16:50 remaining in regulation. The Colonels took their only lead of the game (51-49) after sophomore Ashley Assarian (Chicopee, Mass.) hit a shot from beyond the arc with 7:07 left in the second frame. The Hawks then went on to score 18 of the game's final 27 points.

Junior Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) recorded a double-double, scoring 16 points and pulling down 13 boards. Sophomore Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) and Lutz added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Curry was led by junior Julia Scrubb (Stowe, Vt.) and freshman Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) with 18 points apiece. Freshman Jeanette Fallon (Nashua, N.H.) recorded a team-high nine rebounds.

Both teams return to action on Thursday, as the Colonels travel to the University of New England for a 5:30 p.m. conference matchup, while Roger Williams travels to CCC rival Gordon College for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
