Gordon staves off late run by Women’s Basketball

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – Gordon College earned its first Commonwealth Coast Conference win of the season Thursday evening with a 46-43 win over the Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team.

Gordon improves to 6-6 overall on the year and 1-4 in the CCC. Roger Williams' record also now stands at 6-6, with a 3-2 mark in the conference.

Leanna Tallamy (Wantage, N.J.) knocked down a pair of free throws for Gordon in the opening minute for the first points of the game. Lauren Stumper (Simsbury, Conn.) would later tie the game with a bucket of her own, but the Fighting Scots would respond with a 16-4 run to make it an 18-6 advantage. Gordon would lead by double digits for most of the remainder of the half, taking a 27-13 lead into the break.

Gordon maintained its double-digit lead for the opening minutes of the period, with the Hawks finally pulling within eight (24-32) on a three-point play by Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) with 14:12 to play.

Those three points were part of a 15-2 Hawk run, capped off by another Bovee layup to tie the game at 34 apiece with 8:47 left.

The Hawks continued to remain within striking range, tying the game twice more over the remainder of the contest. Yet RWU could not get the go-ahead bucket. The Hawks trailed by only one over the final two minutes of the game before Tallamy's free throws put Gordon up by three with 6.6 seconds left. Bovee's three-point attempt on the Hawks final possession could not find the back of the net, giving Gordon the win.

Tallamy led the Fighting Scots with 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) added 12 points and six boards off the bench. Aly Towle (Rochester, N.H.) chipped in with six points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Bovee led all scorers with 20 points to go along with nine rebounds. Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) nearly finished with her first double-double of the year, scoring a career-high 13 points with nine boards and three steals. Rachel Chuckran (Bridgewater, Mass.) added two points and seven rebounds.

On Saturday, Roger Williams travels to Wentworth while Gordon hosts Salve Regina University for 1:00 p.m. games.
