WENHAM, Mass. — Despite an evenly matched, hard-fought contest between Gordon College and the Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team, the visiting Hawks handed the Scots a 59-54 loss Tuesday evening.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 11-8 overall, 8-4 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play. With the loss the Scots drop to 7-13 overall, 2-11 in conference.
After the Scots' Aly Towle (Rochester, N.H.) converted a jumper on the opening possession of the game, the remainder of the first half was a tug of war, with both teams trading the lead back and forth but neither able to gain enough offensive traction to establish a substantial advantage.
Then in the final two minutes of the stanza, Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) drained a pair from behind the arc to give the Hawks their greatest lead of the half, 30-24. The Scots answered right back, however, with a jumper of their own from Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) to make it a four-point game going into the half.
Roger Williams maintained its lead well into the second half until the Scots took over by two following a bucket from Kratche at the 10:20 mark. From there Gordon extended the gap to as many as six behind the efforts of Kratche and Leanna Tallamy (Wantage, N.J.) and looked well poised for the victory coming into the final minutes.
But a series of fouls by Gordon down the stretch left Roger Williams to seal the game from the line, with Bovee and Lauren Stumper (Simsbury, Conn.) combining to hit 6-6 free throws en route to the five-point win.
Tallamy had a banner night for the Scots, burying 29 points to go with 11 boards, while Kratche rounded out the effort with a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double and Towle chipped in 11 points. The Hawks' win was paced by Bovee who finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds.
The Scots will play host to the University of New England on Thursday, February 2 at 6:00 p.m., while Roger Williams welcomes Curry in CCC matchup on the same day at 6:00 p.m.
