Men’s Soccer wins in double OT over Salve Regina

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team won a double overtime thriller, clinching the game-winning goal with 1:07 left on the clock to defeat Salve Regina University 3-2 on Wednesday evening.

Darren McCall (Willington, Conn.) came through with the game-clinching score in 98th minute, breaking a 2-2 tie to push the Hawks to the victory.

The Seahawks came back from a 2-0 deficit in the first half, scoring a pair of second-half goals to force the extra periods.

Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) put the first score on the board for Roger Williams at the 9:23 mark, putting in a shot from the top of the box off assists from Kamali Webson (Bellingham, Mass.) and Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine). The Hawks added another score less than two minutes later on an own goal to take a 2-0 lead.

The Hawks looked poised for the easy win until Andrew Chenard (Kingston, Mass.) headed in a pass from Kyle Knoth (East Islip, N.Y.) in the 62nd minute to pull Salve Regina within one. At the 76:57 mark, Chenard fired in the game-tying goal, lofting one over the keeper to knot the match at two.

Neither team scored over the remainder of the period, leading to a scoreless first overtime and setting up McCall's winner.

Tom Mangels (Garden City, N.Y.) earned the win, making a pair of saves in the game. His Salve Regina counterpart, Daniel Stern (Kings Park, N.Y.) made six saves.

Roger Williams (10-4-0, 4-1-0 CCC) will head to Gordon on Saturday, while Salve Regina (9-4-1, 4-2-0 CCC) travels to Wentworth on Saturday as well.
