Men’s Soccer battles to 2-0 win over Western New England

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer kept its hold on first place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 2-0 win over Western New England University Wednesday evening.

The Hawks sit atop the CCC standings with a 6-1-0 conference record and 12-4-0 overall. Western New England moves to 2-3-2 in the CCC (7-7-3 overall) and still holds on to a playoff spot.

The game was tightly contested throughout, with hard tackling, battles for loose balls, and close attempts on both sides. However, one miscue by Western New England would come back to haunt the Golden Bears.

In the 22nd minute, Mike Durkin (Woodbury, Conn.) attempted a pass back to the Golden Bear keeper Domenick Villano (Tuckahoe, N.Y.). Yet the short chip found a little too much air and went over the goalie's head, bouncing into the net for an own goal and a 1-0 Hawk lead.

The Hawks would need less than three minutes for a legitimate offensive goal. Bradley Macdonald (Topsfield, Mass.) sent a long pass to a streaking Andrew Carlson (Ridgefield, Conn.) on the right side. Carlson put a quick juke on a Golden Bear defender, shifted to the left side, and knocked in his fifth goal of the season.

Despite trailing for a majority of the game, Western New England continued to fight throughout, even holding a 21-17 edge on shots. In the end, the Hawk defense would hold the Golden Bears off the board and prevail.

Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.) improved to 5-1-0 on the year, making four saves in the game. Villano also stopped four shots on the evening.

Roger Williams hosts the University of New England while Western New England takes on Curry, both games on Saturday.
