Babson gets past Men’s Soccer in closing minutes

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – Babson College utilized two late goals to comeback against the Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team, defeating the Hawks by a 3-2 score Tuesday evening.

Trailing 1-2, Babson scored two goals in the final ten minutes of play to retake the lead and hold on for the win.

Babson's Ayo Iwuagwu (Lagos, Nigeria) put the first score on the board for the Beavers, heading in a headed pass from Eric Anderson (Scituate, Mass.) from a corner by Brenden Matthews (Marlborough, Mass.). His third goal of the season gave Babson a 1-0 lead 18:50 into the game.

James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) would tie the game at one apiece in the closing minutes of the first half, putting a shot into the left corner off passes from Cooper Allebrand (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Darren McCall (Willington, Conn.). Sheldon scored with 2:52 to play in the half, sending the game into the second period tied.

Roger Williams needed less than four minutes into the second half to take the lead. At the 48:27 mark, Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) fired a pass from Billy Kissane (Glastonbury, Conn.) into the left corner to give the Hawks a 2-1 advantage.

Babson had opportunities throughout the half to knot the game back up at two. Anderson fired a one-timer in the center of the box just over the net in the 50th minute. Later in the 66th minute, Justin Laurenzo (Park Ridge, N.J.) hit the crossbar in the box, which bounced right back to teammate Kevin Israel (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) in the middle of the box. He put one toward the right, but an excellent diving stop by Tom Mangel (Garden City, N.Y.) kept the Beavers from scoring.

It would not be until the 81:19 mark when Babson capitalized on a score, with Anderson taking advantage of a loose ball in the box and putting one in to tie the game at two. Four minutes later, the Beavers would regain the lead for good on a putback by Dillon Ventura (Clifton Park, N.Y.) off of a shot by Laurenzo. The late goal would hold up as Babson escaped with the win.

Jackson Klein (Maplewood, N.J.) earned the win, needing only one save. Mangels took the loss for RWU, saving four shots on the night.

Roger Williams (8-3-0) heads to UMass-Dartmouth on Thursday for a 4:00 p.m. game, while Babson (9-2-0) hosts Lesley on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
