Men’s Soccer gets double OT win in final seconds

Box Score NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team edged UMass-Dartmouth 3-2 in double overtime in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday.

Freshman forward James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) scored on header with just 25 seconds remaining to send the Hawks past the Corsairs.

Junior forward Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) opened the scoring in the 14th minute when he converted a free kick from just outside the penalty area to give Roger Williams the early lead. Both teams would have scoring opportunities throughout the remainder of the opening half, but neither was able to capitalize as the Hawks took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Corsairs came out strong in the second half as freshman forward Alief Solomon (Framingham, Mass.) knotted the score at one apiece when he finished off a pass from senior midfielder Nelson Oliveira in the 50th minute. Twelve minutes later, the Corsairs took a 2-1 lead when sophomore forward Nick Gontijo (Hudson, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season off a pass from junior forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal).

The lead was short-lived as Roger Williams tied the game four minutes later as sophomore forward Andrew Carlson (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored off a pass from Caruso. Carlson's goal capped the scoring in regulation time.

After a scoreless opening ten minutes of overtime, the Hawks won the game in the waning moments as Sheldon converted a header.

The Corsairs were outshot by the Hawks, 17-16. Junior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, Mass.) made five saves for UMD, while sophomore Tom Mangels (Garden City, N.Y.) made six for Roger Williams.

UMass-Dartmouth fell to 7-3-0 with the loss, while the Hawks improved 9-3 with the win. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit UMass-Boston Saturday. RWU will visit Eastern Nazarene Saturday.
