Men’s Soccer heads to ECAC Championship

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer will be advancing to the 2012 ECAC Division III Men's Soccer Championship Game after a 8-2 win over Husson University in the semifinal round Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks improve to 17-2-0 and will face Coast Guard in the Championship Game. Husson wraps up the year with a record of 15-6-1.

Scoring came early and often for Roger Williams, as the Hawks put up four goals in each half. Billy Kissane (Glastonbury, Conn.) notched the first points for RWU, taking a short pass from James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) from the right and putting one into the lower right corner of the net to give RWU a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.

Bradley Macdonald (Topsfield, Mass.) added another score less than five minutes later, with Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) feeding Macdonald a pass across the top of the box. Macdonald put one in the right corner to give RWU a 2-0 advantage.

Tyler Peckham (Coventry, R.I.) knocked in a goal at the 24:16 mark on Sheldon's second assist of the day, while Andrew Carlson (Ridgefield, Conn.) put RWU on top 4-0 with his sixth goal of the season off of a Trevor Hoxsie pass in the 36th minute.

In the second half, Macdonald scored his second goal of the day in the 54th minute off another Caruso pass, giving the Hawks a 5-0 lead.

Husson would tack on its first points of the day less than two minutes later, as Cam Libbey (Hampden, Maine) took a long pass into the box from Stephen Berenyi (Levant, Maine) and fired a shot at Hawk goalie Tom Mangels (Garden City, N.Y.). Mangels stopped the first attempt but the rebound came right back to Libbey, who was able to connect for the score.

The Hawks resumed the scoring with goals by Sheldon and Guthrie Carpenter (Fairfield, Conn.) in the 65th and 66th minutes off respective assists by Rich Pomeroy (Groton, Mass.) and Andrew Brueckner (West Simsbury, Conn.)

Husson added its second point of the game off of an own goal at the 67:43 mark. A misplayed clear by the RWU defense found its way to the net.

Jedu Armar (London, England) wrapped up the scoring for the Hawks with a score in the box off of a long pass by Mark Cassese (Taunton, Mass.) in the 84th minute.

Mangels picked up his eighth win of the year, making two saves in the game in 61:10 of action. Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.) also played 28:50 in net, making one stop on the day.

Mason Smith (Houma, La.) took the loss for Husson, making eight saves.

In the second game of the day, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy advanced to the 2012 ECAC Division III Men's Soccer Championship Game with a 2-1 win over Endicott College in the ECAC Semifinals.

Coast Guard outshot the Gulls 11-4 in the first half and held possession for a majority of the period. However, the Bears were unable to score in the period, sending the game into a scoreless tie into the second half.

Coast Guard would score the first goal of the game early in the second half, with Greg Kennerley (Weymouth, Mass.) knocking in a penalty kick in the 51st minute for his fifth goal of the year.

Endicott did not take long to respond, with Connor Gibbs (Westborough, Mass.) sending in a header from Alex Elia (Somers, Conn.) at the 53:11 mark to tie the game at one.

The Gulls nearly took the lead less than a minute later, with Gibbs firing another shot on net past the Bears' keeper. However, John Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y.) made a diving kick save on a sure goal to keep the score tied at one.

Coast Guard would break the tie in the 79th minute, with Lukas Benedetta (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) putting in the eventual game winner off of pass into the middle of the box.

Endicott continued to fight through the end, sending the ball into the offensive end of the field. Yet Coast Guard was able to hold on and punch a ticket to the championship game.

Richie Burns (Long Beach, Va.) grabbed the win making seven saves on the day. Austin Peluso (Farmington, Conn.) took the loss for Endicott, making two saves in the second half while allowing the pair of goals. Daniel Higgins (South Kingstown, R.I.) played a scoreless first half in net for Endicott.
