DUDLEY, Mass. - A dominant performance by junior Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) led the Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team to a 66-52 victory over host Nichols College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game Wednesday.
Lanieri led all scorers with 22 points on 11-of-16 shooting and pulled down 11 rebounds for the double-double. Hawks' sophomore Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) kept pace with an 18 point, 11 rebound double-double of her own.
Nichols first year guard Sarah Whitestone (Dalton, Mass.) led the Bison with 14 points and four assists, and senior forward Chelsea Shaughnessy (Halifax, Mass.) added 10 points and a game-high seven steals.
Shooting from the field was the difference early on in the game. With 8:07 remaining in the first half the Hawks used a 45% shooting advantage to open up a 22-9 lead while holding the Bison to just 22% from the floor.
Lanieri racked up 16 points and seven rebounds in the first half alone, and helped the Hawks force Nichols to turn the ball over on their final three possessions of the half and carry a 36-19 lead into the locker room.
Nichols outplayed Roger Williams in the second half, using a 12-2 run late in the half to get within 12 on a Whitestone three-pointer with 3:40 left on the clock.
Roger Williams outscored their hosts, 36-16 in the paint and finished the game shooting 47.4% from the floor.
The Bison will look to get back in the win column on Saturday when they travel to the University of New England for a 1 p.m. conference game. Roger Williams hosts Wentworth Saturday at 1 p.m. for a league tilt.
