Anna Maria takes two from Baseball

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team fell in both games of a doubleheader against Anna Maria College Wednesday afternoon, losing 5-3 in the first game and 6-5 in the second game in extra innings.

In the opener, the Hawks got on the board first, getting three runs in the top of the first. John Oppenhimer (Westport, Conn.) brought in Trevor Manzi (Beverly, Mass.) with an RBI triple. He and Tony Trafecany (Franklin, Mass.) would later score on separate errors by the Anna Maria defense.

Anna Maria would waste little time coming back, tying the game in the bottom of the first on three RBI singles. The AMCATS would then put two more runs across in the following inning to break the tie. That would be all the offense for the remainder of the game, as Anna Maria would hold on to their 5-3 lead for the win.

Eric Diffily (North Reading, Mass.) took the loss for RWU, allowing both second-inning runs in 0.2 innings of work. Oppenhimer was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Eric Bransfield (Lynn, Mass.) had the Hawks' only other hit of the day.

In the nightcap, the Hawks scored their first run in the second inning on an RBI double by Matt Swensen (Charlton, Mass.). Anna Maria took a 2-1 lead in the fourth with a pair of runs, but the Hawks would go back on top in the bottom of the frame. RWU put up three runs in the inning, two off of an RBI triple by Rob Zarthar (Dedham, Mass.).

In the fifth inning, the AMCATS regained the lead with three runs, but the Hawks would tie the game in the six on a sacrifice fly by Joe Hock (Braintree, Mass.). Going into extra innings, Anna Maria scored the game-winning run in the eighth on a two-out RBI single. The Hawks got the leadoff man on in the bottom of the inning, but would end the game on a double play to give Anna Maria the win.

Tyler Pogmore (Lebanon, Conn.) suffered the loss for the Hawks, allowing the run in the eighth. Trafecanty and Bransfield both finished with two hits and two runs scored.

Roger Williams (2-5) faces Westfield State College tomorrow in a doubleheader.
