Keene State scores late in win over Baseball

LAKE WALES, Fla. – The Roger Williams University baseball team suffered a 6-1 loss to Keene State College during their last game over Spring Break.

Both teams remained scoreless throughout the first four innings, with Roger Williams and Keene State each recording only two hits.

The Hawks took the lead 1-0 during the fifth inning on an unearned run by Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.). He was walked during his turn up to bat, stole second base, and was able to secure home plate on an error by the opposing catcher.

During the seventh inning, Keene's Tanner Chase (York, Maine) got on base with a single.  Greg Bates (Salem, N.H.) earned an RBI as he hit a line shot through the middle to bring Chase home to score. Later with the bases loaded, Peter Burgio (Bolton, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly to score Chase, putting the Owls up 2-1.

Keene State went on to extend their lead to 6-1 during the eighth inning.  Chuck Vogt (Windsor Locks, Conn.) hit a double down the line for two RBI.  Bates scored for the third time on an RBI single from Kyle Morrill (Auburn, N.H.). Morrill then followed suit, scoring on an RBI single to right field from Erik Bergstrom (Enfield, Conn.).

With the win, the Owls' pitcher Tim Thiesing (South Grafton, Mass.) improved his season record to 2-0.  During eight innings of play, he gave up just one run on three hits with a strikeout and three walks.

Eric Diffily (North Reading, Mass.) took the loss for RWU. He allowed a pair of runs in 1.1 innings after relieving starter Ryan Tita (Newtown, Conn.), who pitched five scoreless innings for RWU. Travers and Matt Jefferis (Cheshire, Conn.) each finished the game 2-for-4, with Travers adding a run scored.

The Hawks fall to 3-8 on the season, while the Owls improve to 8-5.  Roger Williams will travel to Rhode Island College on Tuesday March 20th.  Keene State will take on Springfield College March 21st at 3:30 p.m.
