Baseball wins one of two in CCC doubleheader

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team had a four-game winning streak snapped with a doubleheader split against Salve Regina University, winning the first game 5-1 followed by a 3-5 loss.

In the opener, Salve Regina's Anthony Conte (Georgetown, Mass.) brought in Nichols Dell'Anno (Reading, Mass.) with an RBI single in the second for a 1-0 Seahawk lead. In the third, Trevor Manzi (Beverly, Mass.) belted an RBI single to score Derek Jerome (New Bedford, Mass.) and tie the game at one.

The Hawks would take a 3-1 lead in the fifth on an RBI double by Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) and an RBI infield single by Trevor Larson (Northbridge, Mass.). In the following inning, Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.) blazed around the diamond with an inside-the-park home run to give RWU a 4-1 lead. Jerome followed with a triple and came in on an RBI groundout by John Oppenhimer (Westport, Conn.). That would be all the Hawks needed as RWU came away with the win.

Sean Boyle (Arlington, Mass.) went the distance for the Hawks, allowing only one run on six hits and a pair of walks with two strikeouts.  Manzi, Jerome, and Travers all went 2-for-3, Jerome scoring twice and Manzi and Travers each adding an RBI.

Daniel Kehew (Portsmouth, R.I.) took the loss, tagged for all five runs in 5.1 innings of work. Salvatore Cumella (Ridgefield, N.J.) went 2-for-3 in the game, with Conte chipping in with a hit and an RBI.

The second game saw Salve Regina take a 1-0 lead in the third on Joe Haley's (North Kingstown, R.I.) infield RBI hit, scoring Matt Capone (East Providence, R.I.). Manzi would later tie the game in the fourth with a home run to right center.

In the fifth, Dell'Anno, Conte, and Daniel Donohue (Westbury, N.Y.) each tacked on a run for the Seahawks to help Salve Regina regain the lead and go on top 4-1. Donohue would come through in the following inning with an infield RBI hit to give Salve a four-run lead.

The Hawks rallied for two runs in the sixth on an RBI hit by Manzi and a sacrifice fly by Joe Hock (Braintree, Mass.), but the Seahawks held on in the end for the win.

Kyle Pheland (North Scituate, R.I.) got the win, pitching all seven innings while allowing three runs with four strikeouts. Donohue was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Dell'Anno went 2-for-3 with a run.

Tyler Pogmore (Lebanon, Conn.) suffered the loss, allowing four runs in five innings. Manzi went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Jerome and Oppenhimer each added a hit and a run.

Roger Williams (10-20, 5-7 CCC) hosts Wheaton on Tuesday, while Salve Regina (10-20, 4-6 CC) travels to Johnson & Wales on Thursday.
