BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College and Roger Williams University Baseball teams split a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Pickard Field. Roger Williams won the opener in eight innings, 6-4, before Bowdoin bounced back to take game two, 4-2.
The Polar Bears stand at 18-13 this spring while the Hawks are 11-25.
Down 4-3 in the seventh inning of the opener, Trevor Manzi (Beverly, Mass.) got the Hawks going with a one-out single and pinch-runner Tom Dwyer (Warwick, R.I.) moved to third on Chris Travers' (East Freetown, Mass.) single to right. Dwyer scampered home with the tying run on a passed ball to send the game into extra innings. In the top of the seventh, Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.) tripled home Tim Georgen (Bristol, Conn.) with the go-ahead run and Roger Williams got a key insurance run with Pascarella came home on a sac fly by Derek Jerome.
Pascarella had three hits in the opener for the Hawks, including a pair of runs scored. Buddy Shea had a two-run single in the loss for Bowdoin.
Chris Anderson (Westerly, R.I.) earned the win in relief for Roger Williams, tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless ball with two strikeouts. Drew LoRusso took the loss for Bowdoin in relief, permitting two earned runs in 2.1 frames.
The Polar Bears rebounded behind a complete-game from pitcher Sam Herzig in the nightcap. Herzig allowed one earned run and six hits over seven innings with four strikeouts. Bowdoin loaded the bases and scored twice in errors in the second inning and added to their lead on a squeeze play in the fourth.
Sam Canales went 2-2 with three runs scored and a stolen base for Bowdoin. Kyle LeBlanc and Mike McQuillan both had run-scoring hits as well for the Polar Bears. John Oppenhimer (Westport, Conn.) had two hits and an RBI for the Hawks, who got 5.1 innings from starter Ryan Tita (Newtown, Conn.). Tita took the loss after allowing three earned runs and seven hits.
