Baseball Sweeps Nichols in Double Header

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball takes two games in must win double header Saturday afternoon with Nichols College in Commonwealth Coast Conference play.  Roger Williams won the early game 5-2 on a fourth inning rally.   In the late contest Roger Williams held on to win 4-3 with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh.  Nichol's record drops to 9-22 overall and 7-11 in CCC while RWU improves to 14-25 and 7-9 in CCC play.

Nichols put the first run on the board in the early game with Bryan Gill (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) reaching base on a walk and eventually scoring on a couple of Roger Williams miscues.

Roger Williams answered in the bottom of the fourth with a five run rally that began John Oppenhimer (Westport, Conn.) singling to center.  Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) advanced Oppenhimer with a single to third. Mike Thomas proceeded to drive a ball through the left side to score Oppenhimer and advance Travers to second base.  Chris Comeau (Southbury, Conn.) drew a walk to load the bases for Tim Georgen (Bristol, Conn.) who drew a consecutive walk to score Oppenhimer.  With the bases packed Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.) drove a ball deep to right center for a  triple that scored three runs and put the game at 5-1.

Nichol's Kyle Russell (W. Yarmouth, Mass.) singled to Center field to open the top of the seventh inning. Brett Jackson (Larchmont, N.Y.) followed up with another single to center.  Gill took a ball in the back to load the bases. Russell scored on a passed ball before the side was retired to end the contest at 5-2.

The scoring in the second contest began at the bottom of the first with Derek Jerome (New Bedford, Mass.) tripling in the right center gap.  Oppenhimer singled through the right side to score Jerome.

RWU added another run in the bottom of the third that began with Pascarella reaching first on a walk and then stealing a base to get in scoring position.  Jerome advanced Pascarella with a fly ball to center.  Oppenhimer put the ball in play to score Pascarella for the second run of the contest.

An inning later RWU pushed the lead to three runs sparked by a double to center field by Trevor Larson (Northbridge, Mass.).  Larson advanced to third on a fielder's choice put in to play by Georgen.  Comeau flied out to right field to score a Larson who tagged up.

Nichols put two on the board in top of the fifth to cut the lead. Nick Fowler (Salem, Mass.) singled through the right side to get aboard and stole second and third to put himself in scoring position.  Russell drew a walk to put runners on the corner before stealing second to put two men in scoring position. Nick Shaw (Plymouth, Mass.) took a base on balls to load them up.  Gill flied out to center field to score Fowler before the side was retired.

RWU answered in the same inning with their final run when Trevor Manzi (Beverly, Mass.) reached on error and advanced on a throwing error to get second base.  Joe Hock (Braintree, Mass.) doubled to left field to drive in Manzi and bring the game to 4-2.

Nichols mounted one last charge in the top of the seventh with bases loaded Shaw singled through the right side to score Fowler and cut the lead to one run.  With the bases load and one out a failed squeeze resulted in a strikeout and tag out at the plate to end the game.

Roger Williams awaits conference results to determine their eligibility for Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship play.
