Men’s Soccer nets win over Wheaton

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team served up a 2-1 win under the lights against Wheaton College Wednesday evening. With the win, Roger Williams improves to 7-2-0 on the season, while the Lyons fall to 6-3-0.

In the first half, Wheaton made a strong offensive push early in the game, taking four shots within the first nine minutes of the game. The Hawk defense put a body on two of the shots, while Hawk keeper Tom Mangels (Garden City, N.Y.) made a save on another.

The Hawks looked poised to score at the 17-minute mark on a short through pass into the box to Tyler Sharby (Goffstown, N.H.), yet Max Swanson (Lexington, Mass.) was able to make a diving clear on the ball to avoid a possible goal.

It would not be until the 32:21 mark for the first score of the game, when Tyler Peckham (Coventry, R.I.) headed in a rebound off an Andres Daza (Farmington, Conn.) shot. Daza's attempt bounced off the crossbar, Peckham was able to corral the loose ball for his first career goal as a Hawk.

Roger Williams took the lead into the second half, but the Lyons scored eight minutes into the period. Kevin Gil (Pawtucket, R.I.) knocked in a crossing pass from Kai Gooden (London, England) into the back of the net for the equalizer.

The Hawks responded less than four minutes later, when Kamali Webson (Bellingham, Mass.) headed in a corner kick from Billy Kissane (Glastonbury, Conn.) to regain the lead for the Hawks.

RWU's defense held on for the rest of the game, though the Lyons nearly capitalized on a loose ball in the final minutes of the game. A pass back to Mangels that was played off his chest bounced away from him in the box and almost found the feet of a Lyon player. However, RWU was able to clear the ball out before any attempt was made and secure the win.

Mangels stopped eight shots on the day in the win, while Matt Dickey had one save for Wheaton in the loss.

Roger Williams hosts Wentworth on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., while Wheaton travels to MIT Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. game.
