DUDLEY, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team continued its winning ways with a 69-46 win against Nichols College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Tuesday evening at the Nichols Athletic Center.
Junior Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) led all scorers with 21 points on 10-of-16 shooting for the Hawks, who improved to 9-6 on the season (5-3 CCC). Senior Alexandra Lanieri (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) added 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals while classmate Elizabeth Kilzi (Waverly, Pa.) chipped in with 13 points.
Sophomore Sarah Whitestone (Dalton, Mass.) scored 13 points while sophomore Alexis Wegrzynek (Wilbraham, Mass.) recorded eight points and nine rebounds as the Bison (4-9, 1-6 CCC) suffered their fourth-straight defeat. Senior captain Kristina Lindgren (Sturbridge, Mass.) racked up eight points and three assists while senior Hayley Zophin (Framingham, Mass.) recorded 13 rebounds and four blocks.
The Hawks built an early nine-point lead at 17-8 behind six points from Bovee and five from freshman Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.). Nichols climbed to within five thanks to a pair of buckets by Wegrzynek before the Hawks closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a 32-21 halftime lead, the final two points coming on a layup by freshman Courtney Yost (Halifax, Mass.) at the horn.
Five-straight points from Bovee midway through the second half helped Roger Williams open up an 18-point lead at 48-30. The Hawks shot a scorching 57 percent from the field in the second half and saw their lead swell to 29 with five minutes remaining.
Nichols held a 36-33 edge in rebounding but was outscored 42-18 in the paint. The Bison struggled from the free throw line all night and just 4-of-17. Roger Williams, meanwhile, shot 51 percent for the game and turned 23 Nichols turnovers into 15 points.
Nichols returns to action on Thursday when it heads to 'The Ocean State' to face Salve Regina at 5:30 p.m. The Hawks host the Seahawks Saturday at 1 p.m.
