Women’s Volleyball ties program record with 19th straight win

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team, ranked 22nd in the nation, tied a school record with its 19th straight win, defeating Eastern Nazarene College 3-0 on Tuesday evening.

The Hawks, who have yet to drop a contest this season, rolled off its 19th consecutive victory, tying a school mark set back in the 2011 season. During that year, the Hawks went on a winning streak that began on September 17 and lasted through the end of the regular season and postseason, culminating in a 3-0 win over Endicott to give RWU its fourth straight conference championship.

Eastern Nazarene kept pace with the Hawks throughout the match. In the first set, the Lions scored the first two points of the match on a kill and an ace by Cayla Clinkscale (Winchendon, Mass.). The Hawks came back with a 9-2 run, capped off by back-to-back kills by Liz Flaherty (Sloatsburg, N.Y.)  to go on top by five. However, the Lions rallied back to tie the game at 14 apiece. At that point, RWU took off on a 9-1 run aided by three Lion attack errors and a pair of Sarah McAniff (Redding, Conn.) aces. The Hawks would go on to win the set by a 25-16 score.

In the second set, the Hawks rolled off six straight points to begin the game. Yet the Lions came back with four straight points to pull within two. Both teams would go on to trade points, leading to a 12-10 Hawk lead. Roger Williams began to slowly pull away, building its lead from two to seven, making it a 23-16 advantage. The Hawks ultimately used a kill by McAniff to take the second set 25-17.

Eastern Nazarene opened the third set in control of the match, scoring the first five points of the game. Hawk miscues early led to a 10-3 Eastern Nazarene lead, as the Hawks committed five attack errors over the beginning of the set. The Lions continued to hold the Hawks at bay, eventually taking an 18-13 lead. However, the Hawks continued to chip away at the deficit to mount the comeback. Trailing 16-19, RWU's Katie Thieret (St. Louis, Mo.) rolled off three straight aces to tie the match at 19, followed by a solo block by Alexa Armenti (Dix Hills, N.Y.) to give RWU its first lead of the set. From there, the Hawks closed out the match with a 5-2 run to come away with the 25-21 victory.

Flaherty tied for the team lead with nine kills on the night to go along with eight digs. Darian Tredennick (Houston, Texas) led the team with 11 digs, while Nicole Weber (Poulsbo, Wash.) added 26 assists. McAniff added nine kills, seven digs, and four service aces.

Clinkscale finished with seven kills and a team-high three aces on the night for Eastern Nazarene. Lauryl Berger (Laurel, Del.) had 18 assists and five digs, while Hannah Welsh (Derry, N.H.) contributed four kills and six digs.

Roger Williams (19-0, 3-0 CCC) heads to Endicott on Saturday, while Eastern Nazarene (7-11, 0-2 CCC) travels to Rhode Island College on Thursday.
