Men’s Soccer plays to tie with Nichols

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team battled Nichols College to a 1-1 double overtime draw Saturday afternoon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest.

In the 10th minute, Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) kicked a long pass to James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) who was able to get ahead of the defense and catch up to the ball. It appeared that he had a chance to get a shot on goal, but had the play broken up in the box by Phil Mitto (Windsor, Conn.).

The 15th minute saw the game's first goal scored with the same two Hawks involved in the play. Caruso dropped in a pass to Sheldon, who was able get around the Bison defense and make his way into the box. Sheldon lobbed the ball over Bison keeper Jeremy Nash (West Springfield, Mass.) and put in an open shot to the right side.

A minute later, Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine) threaded a nice pass through the Bison defense to Trevor Sparda (Scarborough, Maine). Sparda put a good shot on the ball, but had his attempt denied by a better save by Nash.

In the 20th minute, Hoxsie sent a crossing pass inside the box to Sheldon who looked poised to earn his second goal of the game, but a great diving save by Nash kept the Hawks off the board and preserve the one-goal deficit.

Nichols had another chance to score with ten minutes remaining in the half, as Brady Boisvert (Plainfield, N.H.) faked a shot inside the box and sent a pass across his body to Isaac Alvarenga (Milford, Mass.). Alvarenga had an open look by hooked the shot wide left.

Nichols had two more close calls in the final two minutes of the half, with Willard having two of his passes, one each to Alvarenga and Boisvert, called for offsides.

Early on in the second half, Hoxsie found Sheldon down the left sideline with a pass leading to a one-on-one opportunity with Nash. Sheldon tried to bend his shot inside the right post, but rolled it just outside the goal.

Nichols was able to notch the equalizer in the 59th minute, when Scott Palmerino (Southbridge, Mass.) threw a long inbounding pass to Michael Perry (Plainville, Mass.), who buried his shot to knot the game at one. Palmerino later had a jumping shot sail just high over the net that would have give the Bison the lead.

With five minutes left in the second half, Hawk keeper Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.) made a strong sliding clear on a loose ball in the box.

Scoring opportunities for the Hawks were limited in the both overtime periods, being held to only one shot over the 20 minutes. Nichols had one stellar chance to end the game shortly into the first OT. Four minutes in, Palmerino found himself with an open shot on the right side. His attempt was denied by a great diving save by Pelloso, followed by a heads-up clear of the loose ball by Cooper Allebrand (Santa Barbara, Calif.).

From that point, neither team was able to get a legitimate scoring opportunity, ending the contest in a stalemate.

Pelloso made five saves on the evening, while Nash had two stops.

Both Roger Williams and Nichols play next on Wednesday, with RWU hosting UMass-Dartmouth and Nichols welcoming Coast Guard.
