Men’s Soccer rolls to win over UMass-Dartmouth, Cook collects 300th college win

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University stretched its unbeaten streak to five games with a 3-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Wednesday evening.

With the win, Roger Williams University Head Coach Jim Cook earned his 300th career collegiate coaching victory. Cook has tallied 278 wins at Roger Williams University in his 20 seasons of coaching at RWU, in addition to his 22 victories during his three seasons of coaching at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.

UMass-Dartmouth used its speed to its advantage in the early goings of the game. The Corsairs held the Hawks without a shot for the first 15 minutes of the game. Conversely, UMass-Dartmouth put six shots with three corners over the same span.

The Corsairs' Adam Philbin (Cumberland, R.I.) fired a shot in the ninth minute to the right side that was headed for the back of the net before a strong diving save by Hawk keeper Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.).

The Hawks' first shot of the contest nearly gave RWU a 1-0 lead. Cooper Allebrand (Santa Barbara, Calif.) kicked a deep free ball into the box to Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine), who fired a long shot from the back. His attempt just flew over the goal off of the fingertips of Andrew Deane (Woburn, Maine).

Roger Williams got on the board in the 27th minute, when Andrew Carlson (Ridgefield, Conn.) kicked a crossing pass over the penalty area to Tyler Peckham (Coventry, R.I.) on the right side. Peckham was able to head the ball in the air and put the shot into the left corner of the net to give RWU a 1-0 lead.

UMass-Dartmouth continued to stay aggressive throughout the remainder of the half. Philbin missed a game-tying goal by inches with 14 minutes left in the half, putting a shot just over the crossbar. Mike Diogo (Bristol, R.I.) sent a chip pass just over a Hawk defender to an open Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal). Ferreira had his attempt stopped head-on by Pelloso to maintain RWU's 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the Hawks tacked on a pair of quick goals to triple their lead. Less than two minutes into the period, James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) brought the ball down the right side to the endline of the box, brought it back and sent a back pass to Dan Kelly (Miller Place, N.Y.) on the left. Kelly swung and missed on his kick, but Trevor Sparda (Scarborough, Maine) drilled the loose ball to the right corner.

Three minutes later, Kelly made up for his missed kick with his second goal of the game, knocking in a shot from Carlson from the left side of the penalty area.

The Corsairs had two great attempts turned away in the 57th minute, with Pelloso making back-to-back saves on shots by Ryland Foster-Gorbach (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Ferreira.

Despite being outshot 21 to 9, Roger Williams still managed to hold on for the win.

Pelloso earned his seventh win of the year, making nine stops on the evening, while Deane took the loss without recording a save.

Roger Williams hits the road on Saturday to take on the University of New England, while UMass-Dartmouth goes to Bridgewater State, also on Saturday.
