Men’s Soccer slips past Babson in closing seconds of 2OT

Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass. — Senior Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine) struck for his second goal of the game at 109:56, lifting the visiting Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team to a 2-1 double overtime victory over Babson College in non-conference men's soccer action at Hartwell-Rogers Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Beavers, who have lost two straight matches, are now 7-4-0 on the season while the Hawks won for the fourth time in their last five games to move to 9-2-0 on the year.

Hoxsie's goal, his 12th of the season, came following a corner kick by senior Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) in the game's closing seconds. The ball deflected out to Hoxsie, who was unmarked just inside the top of the box, where he buried a shot that found the upper right corner to send Roger Williams home victorious.

The result was an unfortunate one for Babson, who held a 9-1 advantage in shots during extra time, and dominated the majority of possession in both overtime periods. The Beavers forced junior Tom Mangels (Garden City, N.Y.) to make three saves in in overtime, while sophomore Tyler Carlos (Prospect, Conn.) missed just wide in the 96th minute, and senior Mike Fisher (Longmeadow, Mass.) had a pair of headers go just off frame.

Both teams struggled to create quality scoring chances in the first half, but it was Roger Williams that made the most of its only shot on goal during the opening 45 minutes. First-year Trevor Sparda (Scarborough, Maine) played a long ball down the left flank that Hoxsie was able to settle before hitting a low shot that slipped past a charging Stephen Donato (Morganville, N.J.) and inside the right post to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead at the 26:42 mark.

Babson, which is currently ranked 10th in the latest NSCAA poll, was finally able to find the equalizer midway through the second half after a strong flurry of pressure. Junior Shawn Citro (Oakland, N.J.) collected a pass on the left wing and beat a defender before slotting a pass to classmate Justin Laurenzo (Park Ridge, N.J.), who finished from just outside the six-yard box to tie the game in the 67th minute.

Both teams had chances to take the lead late in regulation as Hoxsie headed a cross from sophomore James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) just wide of the left post in the 82nd minute, and Beavers' senior Dillon Ventura (Pittstown, N.J.) hit the crossbar from eight yards out in the 85th minute. Fisher then had his attempt from point-blank range saved by Mangels less than a minute later to force extra time.

Donato finished with one save for Babson while Mangels made seven of his eight stops in the second half and overtime for Roger Williams.

The Beavers outshot the Hawks 25-6 for the game, while both teams attempted six corner kicks.

Babson will return to action on Saturday, hosting Wheaton in a pivotal NEWMAC match at 1 p.m., while Roger Williams hosts Eastern Nazarene in a 12:30 p.m. start.
