Men’s Soccer powers past Curry

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team rolled to a 5-1 victory Wednesday afternoon over Curry College in a cold and grey Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup.

The first half saw both teams competing hard, having opportunities to score but just missing In the ninth minute, Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) dropped a short pass to James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) up the middle that was leading to an open shot, but Curry keeper Nick Barber (Pittsfield, Mass.) was able to clear the ball before a shot could be made.

The 23rd minute saw Cooper Allebrand (Santa Barbara, Calif.) had a heads-up step on a pass in the air to Ethan Wajer (Newcastle, Maine) who was making his way behind the Hawk defense.

Two minutes later, Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine) stole the ball at midfield and made his way down the sideline, outrunning the Colonel defense and putting a shot on net that Barber was able to make a diving stop on.

Coming back the other way, Curry's Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.) headed down the left side and curved a shot to the right corner but just hooked it past the inside of the net.

In the 31st minute, Hoxsie was brought down just before he made his way into the penalty area, leading to a free kick from the top of the box. Hoxsie took the kick and was able to bury it into the right corner for his 13th goal of the year.

Caruso added another score two minutes later. After a Curry foul, Caruso fired a deep free kick on net. Barber appeared to have the shot on line but tripped as he was backpedaling to the ball, falling down as the ball sailed over him and into the left side of the net.

The Colonels were able to pull within one in the 36th minute, with Tim Stein (Smithfield, R.I.) playing a loose ball in the left side of the box and getting a lucky bounce from the right post to pull Curry within one.

Andrew Carlson (Ridgefield, Conn.) tacked on the Hawks third score of the game shortly into the second half, getting fed a beautiful pass up the middle from Hoxsie. Five minutes into the period, Carlson was able to beat Barber right for his second goal of the season.

The Hawks tacked on another more goal in the 74th minute, with Dan Kelly (Miller Place, N.Y.) sending a nice pass up the middle to Sheldon, who outran the Colonel defender marking him and sending a shot up the middle for the score.

Michael Correale (Floral Park, N.Y.) wrapped up the scoring for the Hawks with his first goal of the season, heading in a Shane Denault (Chicopee, Mass.) pass in the 88th minute.

Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.) picked up his eighth win of the season, making three saves in the game. Barber suffered the loss, stopping six shots.

Roger Williams (14-2-1, 4-2-1 CCC) will host Gordon College Saturday at 12:30 p.m. during Homecoming Weekend, while Curry (6-7-3, 2-4-2 CCC) will bring Becker College to its campus for a 1:00 p.m. contest, also on Saturday.
