Men’s Soccer uses second-half run for win over Eastern Nazarene

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team rolled off six unanswered second-half goals to mount a 6-1 victory over Eastern Nazarene College Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks had a couple of opportunities to score early on, with Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) sending a pair of shots over the net in the first five minutes of the game. In the eighth minute, Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine) had a good look at the net after a nice pass by James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) led to a one-on-one with the keeper. Fortunately for the Lions, ENC goalie Jake Johnson (Mount Bethel, Pa.) was able to avert the potential goal, keeping the Hawks off the board.

Rich Pomeroy (Groton, Mass.) nearly put in the first score of the game, getting a header off of a corner kick in the 13th minute. However his attempt just bounced off the right post. The loose ball found Hoxsie for a putback try, but ENC's Johnson was able to make the save.

It looked like Eastern Nazarene had an opportunity for a shot on goal in the 19th minute, with a failed clear finding Ryan Piesco (Duxbury, Mass.) in the penalty area. Piesco tried to make a pass to Scott Hansen but was called for an offside penalty.

The Lions finally broke through in the 33rd minute on a counterattack after a Hawk corner. Faries Gray (Bridgewater, Mass.) sent a long pass down the right sideline to a streaking Scott Hansen (Middletown Spring, Vt.). Hansen was able to take the ball into the box and curve a shot into the left corner to give the Lions the lead.

The Hawks would come back to tie the game shortly into the second half, with Trevor Sparda (Scarborough, Maine) sending a cross to James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) in the 51st minute. Sheldon was able to bounce the shot off the crossbar and in. Four minutes later, RWU took the lead on a Sparda goal, heading in the ball off of a free kick by Scott Boucher (Harwinton, Conn.).

It took less than a minute for the Hawks to tack on another score, with Sheldon knocking in his own putback off of a shot off the post. Sparda added the fourth Hawk goal in the 59th minute, heading in a hooking free kick from Caruso.

In the 64th minute, Sheldon completed the hat trick, bouncing in a shot into the right corner off of an Andrew Carlson (Ridgefield, Conn.) pass.

The Hawks added one more late goal with five minutes left to play, with Jesse DiPietro (Woodbridge, Conn.) firing in a deep shot to the back of the net off of a Jedu Armar (London, England) pass.

Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.) played 72:30 and needed only one save to pick up the win. Johnson stopped seven shots in 75:21 of action in the loss.

Roger Williams (10-2-0, 2-2-0 CCC) will travel to Bridgewater State next, while Eastern Nazarene (1-9-0, 0-4-0 CCC) hosts Mitchell, both games on Wednesday.
