Men’s Soccer to play Rutgers-Newark in NCAA First Round

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament and will be taking on Rutgers-Newark at Brandeis in the opening round of the tournament this weekend.

Roger Williams advanced to The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship game as the #5 seed after defeating Salve Regina 3-0 on penalty kicks in the CCC Quarterfinals. RWU then pulled off a 2-1 overtime upset over top-seeded #11 nationally-ranked Gordon College in the CCC Semifinals. Unfortunately the Hawks could not claim its first CCC title since 2006 as Western New England came away with the 2-0 win in the championship.

Rutgers-Newark (17-5-1) claimed an at-large bid and will play in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The Scarlet Knights fell to undefeated Rutgers-Camden 2-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship game. The team enters the tournament ranked fifth in the South Atlantic Region.

The Hawks are one of three teams from The Commonwealth Coast Conference to earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Western England claimed the automatic bid by winning the conference tournament, while Gordon College also earned an at-large bid.

Forty-one conferences were awarded automatic qualification for the championship. One team was selected from Pool B, which consists of independent institutions, as well as members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification. The final 19 berths were reserved for Pool C, which includes institutions from automatic-qualifying conferences that did not win their conference championship, and any remaining Pool B teams.

The two teams will travel to regional site host Brandeis University and play on Saturday.
