Volleyball claims fifth straight CCC Championship

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – For the fifth consecutive season, the Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team are champions of The Commonwealth Coast Conference. The four-time defending champions claimed its fifth title with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-21) win over Endicott College Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Roger Williams (30-3) ties a program record with its 30th win in a season. In addition, the Hawks claim the CCC's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, which begins Friday, November 15. The Hawks will find out which site they will be at along with their opponent on Monday.

The match began as a back-and-forth affair, with neither team leading by more than two for the early part of the first set. The Hawks were able to break a 6-6 tie on a kill by Elizabeth Flaherty (Sloatsburg, N.Y.), then eventually build their lead to a 15-12 advantage. From that point, the Hawks used an 8-0 run to take a commanding 23-12 lead. RWU would go on to take the set 25-14 on a Gull service error.

The second set began much like the first, with both teams trading points and not letting up. The set saw both teams combined for ten ties and five lead changes. At one point, Endicott was able to break a 20-20 tie with a kill by Jackie Cone (Salem, N.H.), followed by a Hawk ball handling error and a service ace by Alleigh VanderMerkt (Riverside, Ill.). The Hawks would call timeout to regroup, and get the next point on a kill by Flaherty. RWU would go on to score the next five points to take the set 25-23.

In the third set, the Hawks opened with a service ace by Darian Tredennick (Houston, Texas) to help spark a 7-4 run to begin the game. Endicott managed to pull within one (8-9), taking advantage of a Hawk service error. However the Gulls would not be able to take the lead as the Hawks maintained its lead throughout the majority of the rest of the set. Endicott managed to tie the match at 19 on the strength of two Callie Dolan (Westford, Mass.) and a Tori McIntyre (San Diego, Calif.) ace. Yet the Hawks responded with back-to-back kills by Andrea Gorman (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Sarah McAniff (Redding, Conn.) after a service error to build the lead back to three. The clinching point came off of a serve that just sailed wide left out of bounds to give RWU the win.

Krystie Luczysnki (Kensington, Conn.) led the match with 19 kills on .792 hitting to go along with two solo blocks and three block assists. Flaherty finished with nine kills and eight digs, while McAniff led the team with 14 digs. Nicole Weber (Poulsbo, Wash.) and Alexa Armenti (Dix Hills, N.Y.) added 21 and 18 assists, respectively.

Dolan led Endicott with 12 kills, while Mackenzie Guerre (Carlsbad, Calif.) had eight kills and two solo blocks. Erika Trudon (Coventry, Conn.) had three service aces and five digs, while VanderMerkt had a match-high 30 assists and two aces.

Endicott (22-15) will find out on Monday if the team receives a bid to the ECAC Tournament.
