Baseball takes down Pride

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team extended its winning streak to six games with an 11-6 victory over Springfield College Wednesday afternoon.

Springfield got on the board in the top of the first, when Mike McGowan (Franklin, Mass.) knocked a two-out triple to center, then scored on a skipped throw from short to first on the following at-bat.

The Pride added two more in the third, beginning with an RBI single by Jared Hopkins (Cranston, R.I.) to score Ryan Gower (Barrington, R.I.). Mike Milano (Cumberland, R.I.) later followed with an RBI single of his own, bringing in Hopkins to give Springfield a 3-0 lead.
The Hawks were able to get on the board in the fourth, with Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) scoring from second on an RBI single by Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.). However, the Hawks were able to gain the lead in the fifth, scoring six runs in the frame to take a 7-3 advantage. All six of RWU's runs came with two outs in the inning, including misplayed line drive at first that allowed Cariglio and Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) to score.
The Hawks added four more runs in the bottom of the seventh, again with all runs coming with two outs. Trevor Larson (Northbridge, Mass.) brought home Travers and Adam Risman (Andover, Mass.) with a two-RBI single. Mike Pascarella also knocked in a pair of Hawks, as Larson and Mike Thomas (Plainville, Mass.) scored on his two-RBI double.

Springfield was able to get two runs back in the top of the eighth, as Brent Poulin (Atascadero, Calif.) hit a two-RBI double to center, scoring McGowan and Louis Ballas (Worcester, Mass.). Yet in the end, the Hawks were able to hold on to their five-run lead for the win.
Brendan Telfer (Avon, Conn.) logged his first win of the season, going seven innings while allowing four runs (three earned) with six strikeouts. Nelson finished 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, while Cariglio and Pascarella each going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Jack Porter (Hamden, Conn.) took the loss for Springfield, giving up five runs (three earned) in one inning of relief of Dan Green (Oakland, N.J.) who allowed one run in 3.2 innings. McGowan went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Poulin was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Roger Williams (16-11) hosts Rhode Island College tomorrow at 3:30, while Springfield (9-12) travels to Wheaton on Friday.
