Baseball continues to roll

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team picked up its ninth straight victory with 3-2 (9) and 10-1 wins over Eastern Nazarene College Saturday afternoon.

Both teams found offensive hard to come by, as RWU's Dan Julian (Stratford, Conn.) and ENC's Brandon Wells (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) were locked in through the game. Though each starter was touched for a run in the fourth inning, that would be all they would throughout their stint on the mound. Ryan Garza (Elsa, Texas) hit an RBI single to score Anthony Berroa (Teaneck, N.J.) for Eastern Nazarene, while RWU's Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) responded with a sac fly to bring in Matt Swensen (Charlton, Mass.) from third.

Wells would scatter six hits and across seven innings, while Julian allowed five hits and one base on balls in six innings. However neither hurler factored in the decision as the contest went to extras and left in the hands of the bullpen.

Tyler Pogmore (Lebanon, Conn.) pitched three scoreless innings for RWU, while Nathan Russell (San Diego, Calif.) tossed a scoreless eighth before getting touched in the ninth. Matt Jefferis (Cheshire, Conn.) led the inning with a leadoff double, bringing up Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.). Travers attempted to sacrifice him over to third, but an errant throw to first allowed Jefferis to score from second and give the Hawks the win.

Pogmore earned the win in relief, striking out four and allowing only one hit. Swensen finished 2-for-3 with a run, while Jefferis was 2-for-4 with the game-winning score.

Russell took the loss, giving up the GW unearned run in 1+ innings of work. Garza finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Berroa was 1-for-4 with a run.

The Hawk offense came to life in the second game, opening the contest with four runs in the bottom of the first. Jefferis, John Oppenhimer (Westport, Conn.), Shawn Cariglio (Milford, Conn.), and Joe Hock (Braintree, Mass.) each logged RBIs for RWU in the inning.

Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.) put one more on the board in the second, taking advantage of a pickoff attempt at first and stealing home plate. In the third, the Hawks would add three more, taking advantage of three errors in the innings.

Defensive woes would plague the Lions throughout the course of the game, as Eastern Nazarene committed five errors in the game, compared to only getting four hits offensively in the game. The Lions picked up their only run of the game in the top of the sixth, on an RBI single by Berroa to score Pat Yee (Lynnfield, Mass.).

Josh Orosz (Fairfield, Conn.) picked up his second win of the year, giving up only two hits in five shutout innings. Pascarella finished 3-for-4 with two runs with a career-high five stolen bases. Oppenhimer and Jefferis each went 2-for-4, with Oppenhimer scoring twice and adding an RBI, and Jefferis contributing a run and RBI.

Matt Jayne (Quincy, Mass.) was tagged for all ten runs (four earned) in 3.1 innings. Berroa, Yee, and Rocco Martinelli (Sheridan, Calif.) all finished 1-for-3.

Roger Williams (19-11, 8-2 CCC) travels to Salve Regina tomorrow, while Eastern Nazarene (9-17, 1-9 CCC) goes to Curry on Monday.
