Western New England takes doubleheader over Baseball

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Western New England University notched a sweep over the Roger Williams University Baseball team in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader at Pat Ricci Field at Trelease Park on Sunday, 6-2 and 8-0.

WNE rapped 25 hits and got strong pitching performances from senior Mike Lospinuso and junior Brendan Nugent

With the wins, the 24-8 Golden Bears maintain a share of first place in the CCC standings with Endicott at 13-1 in conference games--which swept Curry at home today. The Hawks, meanwhile, fall to 20-15 on the season and 8-6 in the league.

Lospinuso went the distance in game one to improve to 6-1, scattering six hits while allowing two unearned runs. He had six strikeouts and did not issue a walk.

Junior leadoff hitter Jeff Schult led WNE with two hits, including a double, and three runs batted in.

Matt Jefferis (Cheshire, Conn.), whose brother, Kevin, is a pitcher on the WNE squad, led RWU with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate, with a RBI.

Western New England built a 4-0 lead after two innings and never looked back. Schult highlighted the quick start with a two-run double down the left-field line in the bottom of the second.

In the nightcap, Nugent also upped his record to 6-1 after combining for a shutout with senior Kevin Jefferis. Nugent allowed five singles and did not surrender a walk before giving way to Jefferis, who had a perfect 1-2-3 seventh to close it out.

Junior Steve Ambrosino and senior Kyle McKelvey paced the Golden Bears' 14-hit attack by recording three apiece, with Ambrosino driving home three runs and McKelvey knocking in one.

Senior Taylor Perun capped a WNE three-run first inning with a two-run single through the left side. The Golden Bears tacked on four more runs in the next frame.

Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.), Joe Hock (Braintree, Mass.), Trevor Larson (Northbridge, Mass.), Tyler Campo (Wrentham, Mass.), and Matt Jefferis all had singles for the Hawks.
