Baseball splits with UMass-Dartmouth in regular season home finale

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Baseball finished its last home games of the regular season with a split against the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, falling 2-8 in the opener before salvaging a 4-2 win.

The first game began with a scoreless first and second inning before the Corsairs put up the first runs of the game in the third. George Aggostini (Dighton, Mass.) gave UMass-Dartmouth a 1-0 lead with an RBI single to score Taylor Cacciola (West Greenwich, R.I.). Matt Worden (New Bedford, Mass.) then followed with a two-RBI single, bringing in Aggostini and Connor Shaw (Goffstown, N.H.).

In the fourth inning, a series of Hawks miscues put the team in a deep hole. The Corsairs led off the inning with a misplayed ball at short, a failed forceout at second, a wild pitch an, and an error at second. By the time the inning was over, UMass-Dartmouth plated five unearned runs to take a commanding 8-0 lead.

The Hawks got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.), scoring Matt Jefferis (Cheshire, Conn.). RWU put another run across in the sixth via an RBI hit by Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.), but that would be all the Hawks would manage in the game.

George Bent (Barnstable, Mass.) picked up the win, going six innings and allowing two runs (one earned). Aggostini finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Worden was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Cacciola and Shaw each added two hits, two runs, and an RBI.

Dan Julian (Stratford, Conn.) took the loss, allowing eight runs (three earned) in four innings. Jefferis and Chris Travers (East Freetown, Mass.) each finished 1-for-3 with a run. Pascarella went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and an RBI.

In the nightcap, the Corsairs stormed out to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening inning. Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass.) led off with a walk and was later brought in by Aggostini on an RBI single. Corey Allison (Taunton, Mass.) then scored two batters later when Alex Newton (Saco, Maine) punched him in with a single between first and second.

The Hawks came back to tie the game in the fourth, beginning with an RBI triple by Joe Hock (Braintree, Mass.) to bring Nelson from first. Mike Thomas (Plainville, Conn.) followed with an RBI groundout to score Hock. RWU would go ahead one inning later on an RBI single by Thomas, giving RWU a 3-2 lead. RWU added an insurance run in the sixth with Trevor Larson (Northbridge, Mass.) coming in from third on a wild pitch.

Josh Orosz (Fairfield, Conn.) would ultimately earn the victory, allowing two runs in five innings before a leadoff double in the sixth by Aggostini. Tyler Pogmore (Lebanon, Conn.) then came in and stranded Aggostini at third before working a 1-2-3 seventh for his sixth save of the year.

Nelson finished 2-for-2 with a pair of runs, while Hock was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Larson also finished 2-for-3 in the game as well.

Joshua Tombs (Kingstown, R.I.) took the loss, giving up three runs in 4.2 innings. Aggostini kept up his productive day at the plate by going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Allison and Newton each went 1-for-3 in the game.

Roger Williams (21-16) wraps up the regular season at Nichols on Saturday in a CCC doubleheader, while UMass-Dartmouth (12-19) travels to Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday.
