Josh Orosz (Fairfield, Conn.) pitched eight strong innings to lead the Roger Williams Hawks past the Salem State Vikings on Tuesday afternoon at the Central Campus Baseball Field. Orosz (1-2) scattered six hits and allowed just two earned runs to notch his first victory of the season. Roger Williams is now 15-11 on the year, while Salem State slips to 10-10.
Roger Williams threatened in the first after
Mike Pascarella (Milford, Conn.) and
John Oppenhimer (Westport, Conn.) singled, but Salem State starter Sean Buckland (Lynn, Mass.) picked off Pascarella, and one batter later catcher Genaro Ciulla (Peabody, Mass.) gunned down Oppenheimer attempting to steal second to end the threat.
Reid Nelson (Wallingford, Conn.) put the Hawks up 1-0 in the 2nd when he led off the inning with a triple to deep left center, and was driven in by a
Matt Jefferis (Cheshire, Conn.) base hit. The Vikings tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when Richard Fecteau (Newbury, Mass.) doubled and came around to score on a single by Ryan Beliveau (Lynn, Mass.).
Roger Williams went back on top in the third with some timely base running.
Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, Mass.) walked and Pascarella singled to put runners on first and second. Following a double steal, captain
Matt Swensen (Charlton, Mass.) drove in Timothy with an RBI ground-out. Salem State used a bang-bang strike out, caught stealing double play to stifle another Williams rally in the fourth. Steve Buitkus (Gloucester, Mass.) tied the game for Salem State in the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch after hitting a single to lead off the inning.
Matt Abrain (Northbridge, Mass.) came on in relief of Buckland in the top of the 5th. Buckand allowed two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts in the loss.. The Hawks' Jefferis recaptured the lead for his team when he came home on a wild pitch in the 6th inning. Sean O'Brien (Swampscott, Mass.) relieved in the seventh, but the Hawks extended their lead to 5-2 when Pascarella and Swenson both singled and scored.
Andrew Guido (Peabody, Mass.) entered in the eighth for Salem State, and Roger Williams put the game away, scoring four times, highlighted by a Swenson two-run double to take a 9-2 lead. Kevin Church (Peabody, Mass.) finished the long inning for Salem State.
Chris Anderson (Westerly, R.I.) pitched a scoreless ninth for the Hawks. Pascarella finished 3-for-5 with two steals, while Swenson had two hits, including a double, and three RBI. Nelson also had three hits for the Hawks.
Fecteau had the only multiple hit game for Salem State, going 2-for-4.
The Vikings will play at home tomorrow at 3:30 against Plymouth State University. The Hawks also play on their home field tomorrow at 3:30 against Springfield College.
