Men’s Soccer takes season debut over St. Joseph’s (Maine)

Box Score 1 BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team claimed the 2013 Squad Locker Classic with a 2-0 victory over Skidmore College Sunday afternoon. The win gives the Hawks their first tournament championship since the 2011 season.

The Hawks were able to tack on their first score of the day halfway through the first half. In the 23rd minute, Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) fired a long through-ball down the left side to a streaking Andrew Carlson (Ridgefield, Conn.). Carlson found Tournament Offensive MVP James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) cutting down the middle, where he was able to convert the kick for a score.

At the 32:33 mark, Sheldon came through for Roger Williams once again. Trevor Sparda (Scarborough, Maine) fed Carlson a pass up the middle into the box, where Sheldon fired one on net. Skidmore keeper Eli Kisselbach (Stamford, Conn.) made a great initial stop on the shot, but the spin on the ball wouldn't allow him to keep control, as the ball trickled away and into the goal.

Holding on to the two-goal lead, the Hawks were able to hold Skidmore to only four shots in the period to hold on for the win.

Tom Mangels (Garden City, N.Y.) earned the win for RWU, making five saves in the shutout. Kisselbach had one save on the day for the Thoroughbreds.

In the earlier game, St. Joseph's College of Maine and Salve Regina University battled to a 1-1 tie in double overtime.

All-tournament selection Kyle Shangraw (Westbrook, Maine) scored the first goal of the game for St. Joseph's (Maine) in the 22nd minute. He corralled a long pass and fired a shot from outside the box that deflected off of a Salve Regina defender and into the back of the net.

Salve Regina responded shortly into the second half. Alvaro Castillo (Duxbury, Mass.) gained possession and bounced a shot over the keeper to tie the game in the 48th minute.

Salve Regina was able to gain momentum in the overtime periods, outshooting the Monks 7-2 over the extra 20 minutes. However the game ended in a stalemate before another goal could be scored.

Salve Regina's Daniel Stern (Kings Park, N.Y.) had six saves in the game while Scott Benner (Post Falls, Idaho) stopped three shots for St. Joseph.
