Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The #25th-ranked Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team had its unbeaten record threatened by Connecticut College Wednesday evening, but still came away with a 3-2 win.
The match started off with sub-standard play by the Hawks, as Connecticut College jumped out to a 4-0 lead without registering a single attack. RWU ultimately came back to tie the match at 13, and eventually taking a 21-17 lead. However, the Camels marched back with three straight points before going down 21-24. Connecticut College would roll off five straight points, three of which on RWU attack errors to pull off the 26-24 win.
RWU came out aggressive in the second set, storming out to a 10-2 run. The Hawks remained in control the entire game, never allowing the Camels to come closer than three en route to the 25-17 win.
The third game saw both teams play close through the opening, with RWU eventually taking a 9-6 lead. The Hawks would then use a 10-6 run to go on top 19-12. Holding a comfortable lead, RWU went on to take the game 25-14 and lead 2-1.
The fourth set saw the Camels play its best offensive game of the match, while conversely RWU had its worst offensive game. Connecticut College hit .297 in the set, connecting on ten kills out of 27 attempts with only two errors. RWU committed 12 attack errors against only nine kills in the set. The Camels would tie the match at two apiece with an easy 25-12 win.
RWU would get back on track in the fifth set. RWU broke a 5-5 tie with a 10-4 run to close out the match and come away with the win. The Hawks ended up hitting .476 (12-2-21) in the clinching set, compared to the Camels .150 hitting percentage.
Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Conn.) set a new season high with 21 kills in the match. Liz Flaherty (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) and Kristen Boyer each talled 14 kills in the match, with Boyer adding 15 digs and Flaherty a pair of aces. Alexa Armenti (Dix Hills, N.Y.) had a career-high 51 assists in the match, while Darian Tredennick (Houston, Texas) finished with 21 digs.
Alex Mcdevitt (Medfield, Mass.) led the Camels with 17 kills to go along with 13 digs. Jamie Balkin (Glencoe, Ill.) finished with 23 digs, while Emily Arterbury (Austin, Texas) added 42 assists. Chloe Ainley had eight kills and a game high six blocks (three solo, three assist).
Roger Williams University (14-0) hosts Curry Thursday evening, while Connecticut College (3-4) hosts Wesleyan on Friday.
