Men’s Soccer downs Endicott in double OT

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team utilized a late goal to earn a 2-1 win over Endicott College in double overtime Saturday afternoon.

The Gulls kept the offensive pressure early on in the game. Endicott's Sebastian Rozo (Stamford, Conn.) had a great look at a shot in the seventh minute, firing a long ball from 10 yards outside the box. Unfortunately for the Gulls, the ball sailed just a few feet above the net.

Nine minutes later, Rozo sent a chip pas to Alex Jorge (Billerica, Mass.) for a jumping header into the right corner of the goal, but was called offside to deny the Endicott score.

The Hawks had a close call with 15 minutes to play in the half. After a Gull foul, the Hawks sent a free kick to the left side, which Andrew Carlson (Ridgefield, Conn.)

A controversial call came in the 34th minute, when Rozo was hit just before a shot attempt on a long pass. His shot ended up going into the net, but was called off due to a foul called just before he could get the shot off. The shot appeared to be taken before the whistle was blown, but the call eventually stood, keeping the Gulls off the board

With four minutes remaining in the half, a long pass to Dan Kelly found himself with the ball off of a long pass down the right side. He had a chance to make a crossing pass through the box to an open Hawk, but was denied by Zach Mullane (Westfield, Mass.).

Endicott would break through early into the second half. In the 52nd minute, Rozo sent in a corner kick that was punched out by Hawk keeper Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.). However, the ball did not travel far enough out the box, allowing Jorge to put the ball in after a deflection off of a Hawk defender.

Roger Williams responded four minutes later to the game up. Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) found James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) along the left side of the field. Sheldon would then drop a shot into the left side of the net to knot the game at one apiece.

With 13 minutes to play, Connor Gibbs (Westborough, Mass.) had a wide-open look in the box after a nice crossing pass by Rozo but shot the ball just over the net. A few minutes later, Rich Pomeroy (Groton, Mass.) had a crucial stop on a pass across the box to keep Endicott from putting a shot on net.

The Gulls had one last opportunity to end the game in regulation, with Jed Magnusson serving up a pass to the middle to Gibbs with 37 seconds left. Gibbs' header flew just high over the net, ultimately sending the game to overtime.

In overtime, both teams had an excellent chance to win the game. In the fourth minute of OT, Gibbs had a clear shot that ended up bouncing off of a Hawk defender. On the ensuing counterattack, Carlson put a one-time shot off of a Sheldon pass wide right.

The second overtime saw the Hawks nab the golden goal. In the 101st minute, Caruso booted a long shot from the right side of the field and hooked it into the left corner of the net to give the Hawks the win.

Pelloso had five saves on the day in the win, while Austin Peluso (Farmington, Conn.) made eight saves in net.

Roger Williams (7-1-0, 1-1-0 CCC) heads to Wheaton on Wednesday, while Endicott (4-4-0, 1-1-0 CCC) hosts Springfield on Monday.
