Men’s Soccer prevails in OT over UMass-Dartmouth

Box Score DARTMOUTH, Mass. – An own goal in the 97th minute handed the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth a 2-1 overtime setback to the visiting Roger Williams University Men's Soccer this evening at Cressy Field.

The Hawks created the game-winning opportunity by playing a high, arching pass from the midfield that a Corsair attempted to share with the final line of defense.  A miscommunication between teammates led to the ball rolling into the vacant net as the hosts tried in vain to clear.

Moments before, UMass Dartmouth nearly ended the non-conference contest when sophomore Anthony Gonzalez (Medellin, Colombia) sent a diving header just wide of the far post.

The Corsairs dominated the first half—holding a 12-5 advantage in shots—but were largely unable to solve senior goalkeeper Tom Mangels (Garden City, N.Y.).  Roger Williams converted its first attempt as senior Andrew Carlson (Ridgefield, Conn.) ripped a low, sinking shot inside the near post from 25 yards out.

UMass Dartmouth netted the equalizer in the 39th minute, when sophomore Matt Vidal (New Bedford, Mass.) charged down the left flank and beat the keeper inside the far, right post for his team-leading sixth marker of the season.

Senior Alex Machado (New Bedford, Mass.) nearly ended the contest with less than 90 seconds remaining in regulation as the defender received a crossing pass along the left post, but was unable to fit the attempt under the cross bar as his attempt sailed wide.

In between the pipes, Mangels reached double digits in saves with 10, while sophomore Luis Carranza (New Bedford, Mass.) made two stops.

The University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth held a 22-9 advantage in shots. The Hawks held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks, while the Corsairs earned the lone opportunity during the extra session.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 12 noon on Oct. 18, when the Corsairs travel to Little East Conference rival Plymouth State University.
