Women’s Volleyball sweeps Wentworth

Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – A balanced offensive attack helped pace the Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action played at Tansey Gymnasium.

The Hawks, who earlier in the day had defeated Gordon, 3-0, ran their win streak to two and improved to 17-5 overall and 6-0 in CCC. The Leopards see their four-match win streak halted, falling to 13-10 (2-3).

The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's volleyball team was swept 3-0 by Roger Williams University in Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday afternoon in Tansey Gymnasium.

Wentworth opened the first set with back-to-back kills to lead 2-0, but Roger Williams responded with four straight points to lead 4-2. The Leopards kept things close in the first, as they came within one point several times. The Hawks would widen the gap, scoring eight unanswered to lead 19-10. Roger Williams was able to capitalize on a Wentworth ball handling error to take the first set by a 25-13 score.

Set two started with Wentworth capturing the first point, but Roger Williams wouldn't lose the lead after going up 2-1. With the score at 20-10, junior Elizabeth Flaherty (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) served twice for Roger Williams, resulting in scoring efforts for the Hawks. Senior Emily Werth (Cheshire, Conn.) replaced Flaherty at 22-10 and led the Hawks to a 25-10 set victory, which included two service aces.

Roger Williams scored the first point of the third set and never looked back. The Hawks opened on a 9-3 run and also scored 10 straight points with senior Andrea Gorman (Wilbraham, Mass.) serving for the Hawks. Roger Williams closed the set with a freshman Josalyn Benson (Phoenix, Ariz.) kill off of a dig from sophomore Sarah McAniff (Redding, Conn.) to take it 25-9.

Sophomore Kristen Boyer (Ephrata, Pa.) led the way for the Hawks with nine kills, three aces, and nine digs while hitting .368. Sophomore Brittany McMullen (Lancaster, Pa.), Flaherty, and sophomore Katie Thieret (St. Louis, Mo.) each had eight kills with McMullen recording five blocks, Flaherty three blocks, and Thieret two blocks. Freshman Maria Batas (Merrick, N.Y.) had 12 digs and junior Nicole Weber (Poulsbo, Wash.) dishing out 34 assists.

Freshman Sydney Meyers (Arnold, Md.), freshman Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.), and sophomore Stephanie Nihan (Dracut, Mass.) had three kills apiece for the Black and Gold. Senior Shannon Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) had 13 assists and classmate Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.) had eight digs.

Wentworth continues conference play on Wednesday as they travel to Western New England for a 7 p.m. match. Roger Williams returns home on Saturday October 25 for morning match-up against Coast Guard.
