Carlson powers Men’s Soccer to win on Senior Day

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team staved off a late threat by the University of New England, holding the Nor'Easters off for a 2-1 victory on Senior Day.

Before the contest, Roger Williams' seniors Tom Mangels (Garden City, N.Y.), Andre Brueckner (W. Simsbury, Conn.), Andrew Carlson (Ridgefield, Conn.), Cooper Allebrand (Santa Barbara, Calif.), and Tyler Sharby (Goffstown, N.H.) were recognized for their hard work over the past four seasons. In addition, Sharby, who has been sidelined due to injury, was given his first start for RWU since September 10.

Early on in the first half, both teams limited each other's offensive chances, stepping in front of passes and closing in on players in the box.

Things turned in the Hawks' favor in the 25th minute. James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) took the ball in the penalty area and slid a pass to his left side to Andrew Carlson (Ridgefield, Conn.). Carlson stepped up and buried a center to the middle of the net, putting RWU up 1-0.

Carlson and Tyler Kuchenbecker (Wellesley, Mass.) later combined for a beautiful goal in the 30th minute. Kuchenbecker took a pass from Carlson and made his way down the right side while Carlson centering in the box. Kuchenbecker then kicked a long pass into the box to Carlson, who fired a hard one-timer to the middle for his second goal of the game and his sixth of the year.

Darius Ntacyo (Saco, Maine) came close to getting UNE on the board in the 36th minute, getting off a contested shot with a Hawk defender on his back. However, he wasn't able to hit it cleanly and Mangels was able to make the save.

Roger Williams went into the half up by two, but the Nor'Easters were able to cut the deficit shortly into the second period. Ryan Stephens (Stow, Mass.) knocked a shot from the right side of the top of the box but had it deflect off a Hawk defender. The ball took a serendipitous bounce to Erik Holmquist (Hallingsjo, Sweden), who converted the shot and make a 2-1 game.

In the 55th minute, UNE had another good chance to score, with Nick Paine (Dartmouth, Mass.) feeding Stephens with a good pass towards the right. Brueckner was able to catch up with him and deter him enough to make his shot difficult and right at Mangels.

UNE continued to fight throughout the remainder of the game, but could not get the game-tying score, as RWU held on to take sole possession of fifth place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.

Mangels finished with five saves for RWU while picking up his fifth shutout of the year. Aidan MacParland (Brockville, Ontario) had five saves as well for UNE.

On Tuesday, Roger Williams (9-6-2, 4-3-1 CCC) closes out the regular season at Gordon, while the University of New England (9-5-2, 3-4-1 CCC) heads to Curry.
