Volleyball shuts down University of New England

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team defeated University of New England Saturday afternoon in a conference match up. The Hawks' 3-0 (25-26, 25-14, 25-18) victory improves their overall record to 19-5 while the Nor'easters drop to 11-13.

The match began in Roger Williams' favor, but University of New England was sure to battle keeping the score head to head. However, Roger Williams quickly picked up their pace and rolled an 11-5 run. The Hawks continued to lead the rest of the set, and closed out with a kill by Andrea Gorman (Wilbraham, Mass.).

In the second set, the Nor'Easters started off strong with lead of two, but the Hawks quickly tied things back up. From there, the Hawks managed to roll another 11-5 run. With no trouble at all, Roger Williams continued easily scoring points against University of New England. Sarah McAniff's (Redding, Conn.) impressive kill would close up the second game.

The third set, once again started off quite even, with both teams answering each other's points. Soon thereafter, the Hawks picked up their pace and ran an 11-3 run against the Nor'Easters. However, once the Hawks reached their 23rd point, they stumbled over a few errors allowing for the Nor'easters to pull gain five points with the help kills by Leah Janelle (Madbury, N.H.) and Grayson Szczepaniak (Lakewood, Ohio). However, Roger Williams sealed the deal from a service error from their opponents.

McAniff led the Hawks with seven kills, while Gorman and Elizabeth Flaherty (Sloatsburg, N.Y.), added five kills apiece. Nicole Weber (Poulsbo, Wash.) handed out 13 assists, while Josalyn Benson (Phoenix, Ariz.) had 12 assists. Maria Batas (Merrick, N.Y.) had an impressive 18 digs for the Hawks.

Brooke Gibbons (Miami, Fla.) led the Nor'easter with 16 assists and 16 digs, while Szczepaniak contributed to seven kills and Janelle with six kills.

Roger Williams takes on Western New England University Tuesday in the team's regular season finals. Whereas, University of New England plays against Emerson College and Newbury College this Thursday on their home turf.
