Late baskets lift Women’s Basketball over Bowdoin

Box Score CASTINE, Maine - Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.) sunk a three-pointer with 12 seconds left and made a free throw with two seconds remaining to give the Hawks the 58-57 victory on Saturday night in the Pepsi Mariner Challenge.

The Hawks will face the host Maine Maritime Academy tomorrow at 2:00 PM in the tournament championship game, after the Mariners defeated the University of Maine at Fort Kent 63-57 in game one. Bowdoin will play Maine Fort Kent at 12:00 pm in the consolation game.

Ariola led all scoring with 22 points, and five assists, while teammates Katie Lowerre (Sharon, Mass.) and Rachel Battista (Johnston, R.I.) added nine points each.

Shannon Brady led the way for Bowdoin with 12 points and seven rebounds, Kate Kerrigan and Marle Curle picked up 11 points each, and Megan Phelps grabbed a game-best 15 boards.

Bowdoin held a 28-24 lead at halftime, and built a six-point lead in the second half, but the Hawks continued to fight. Tied at 54-54 with 1:27 remaining in the game, Kerrigan sunk a three-pointer of her own to give the Polar Bears a 57-54 lead, but Ariola's last minute heroics gave the Hawks the victory 58-57.
