Connecticut College earns win over Women’s Basketball

Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team dropped its second straight contest, falling 75-64 to Connecticut College Saturday afternoon.

The Camels closed out their opening week of action with a perfect record of 3-0, while the Hawks slipped to 2-2 with the setback.

Mairead Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Connecticut College. Sophomore Liz Malman (Mendham, N.J.) poured in 15 points to go with three steals and two rebounds. Carlee Smith (Willimantic, Conn.) contributed with 11 points and eight assists. Jenna Lovett (Tolland, Conn.) reached double-digits with 10 points and seven boards. Shaniqua Shaw (Worcester, Mass.) ripped down 12 rebounds to go with her eight points, shooting 3-for-5 from the field in 16 minutes of productive play off the bench.

Roger Williams University junior guard Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.) poured in a game-high 20 points to lead the visitors in the setback. Rachel Battista (Johnston, R.I.) and Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) both finished with eight points.

Junior forward Alyssa Otis (Torrington, Conn.) added six points and nine rebounds in the loss.

The Camels enjoyed a 15-to-2 advantage at the foul line in the first stanza. Malman and Hynes both scored nine points in the half and the Camels carried a 37-22 advantage into the break.

Connecticut College out-scored the Hawks 13-to-8 at the start of the second half. Smith buried a three-ball from the left side with 14:43 remaining to cap the rally and put the Camels in complete control with a 50-30 advantage.

Roger Williams continued to battle back and with 5:55 remaining, Ariola dialed up a three-ball from the left side to cut the lead to 64-49. Back to back baskets in the paint from Teagan Dunn (Burlington, Conn.) and Otis trimmed the Camel lead to 66-53 with 4:10 remaining.

Battista converted a field goal with 1:20 to play that made it a three possession game with Connecticut College on top 70-61.

But Amelia King (San Francisco, Calif.) answered with some points in the paint for the Camels and Connecticut College was able to hold on for the 75-64 triumph.

Connecticut College enjoyed a 43-to-39 advantage on the backboards and out-scored the Hawks 27-to-11 at the charity stripe.
