Women’s Basketball begins CCC play with win

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team ended a four-game skid with a 73-59 victory over Nichols College Wednesday evening.

The Hawks (3-4) earn their first Commonwealth Coast Conference win over the season, while Nichols falls to 2-2 overall (0-1 CCC).

The Hawks' Mariah Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass.) and Emma Klis (East Northport, N.Y.) notched back-to-back jumpers to open the game, kicking off a 13-4 RWU run. Nichols managed to climb back into the game, with Taylor Daniels (Dudley, Mass.) knocking down a three-pointer to put the Bison up 19-17 for their first lead of the game with 7:56 left in the first half.

The Hawks kept the game close but wasn't able to retake the lead until the final minute of the period, with Lisa Lutz (Downers Grove, Ill.) laying in a basket to break a 26-26 tie. Amber Litwinko (Berlin, Conn.) dropped a pair of free throws for the Bison with 14 seconds left, but Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.) sent RWU into halftime with the lead, knocking down a three-pointer in the closing seconds.

RWU opened the second half on a six-minute 13-5 run to go on top by 11. Nichols struggled offensively, missing 11 of their first 13 shots from the field over the stretch. The deficit amounted to be too much to overcome.

The Bison pulled within eight (36-44), but a three-point play by Klis put RWU back up by 11. The Hawks led by double digits for most of the remainder of the game.

Ariola finished with 20 points and four assists in the win, while Nicholas had 18 points and three rebounds. Katie Lowerre (Sharon, Mass.) scored a career-high 17 points with three assists and three steals.

Litwinko finished with a game-high 23 points along with six rebounds and three assists. Alexis Wegrzynek (Gardner, Mass.) had a double-double, going for 16 points and 13 rebounds.

On Saturday, Roger Williams will head to Western New England University while Nichols hosts Salve Regina.
