SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Roger Williams University Women's Basketball team rolled to a 71-61 win over Western New England University at the Alumni Healthful Living Center Field House on Saturday in a Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup.
Freshman Paige Young scored 10 points and grabbed 14 rebounds (10 offensive), and Junior Samantha McCann led Western New England in points with 12.
Western New England's (7-11, 4-8 CCC) strong rebounding on both sides of the floor offset their early shooting woes in the first half of play. The Golden Bears pulled down 23 first half rebounds (17 offensive).
The Golden Bears showed good ball movement and broke the Hawks press well, but only shot 35.6% from the field on 21-of-59, compared to the Hawks 56.0% on 28-of-50.
The Golden Bears bench scored 23 points with senior co-captain Katie Eckert leading the way scoring 10 points on 3-of-7 from the field while knocking down two three pointers. Ali Pessolano was 2-for-6 from the floor with eight points and two assists.
The Roger Williams Hawks (15-4, 9-2 CCC) had three starters in double figures led by Ari Renwick (Westwood, Mass.) who scored 19 points and added eight steals. Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) chipped in 17 points and Angelica Ariola (Prospect, Conn.) 16 points and seven assists.
The Golden Bears next matchup is at Gordon College on Tuesday in another CCC game. Roger Williams will host Eastern Nazarene on Tuesday.
